Caña Prieta flowering

Hey, all. I've seen the posts about Caña Prieta and other Chusqueas flowering in recent years. This year it's my turn. CP is covered in them. C. gigantea is still untouched and shooting like crazy, as it does. How are others' Chusqueas? Have those that flowered in past years died? Fred, how are your...

Re: 'Megurochiku' flowering

I spoke to the folks at Bamboo Garden. They confirmed that they've heard of other 'Megurochiku' flowering in the area and that theirs, while not in full flower, are showing signs of heading that direction.

So I guess I'll hope for a full recovery and some viable seed. I'll let you know what happens.

'Megurochiku' flowering

Three years ago, I bought a #5 Ph. nigra 'Megurochiku' and put it in the ground right away. It put up 3 decent shoots that spring, none in 2016, and one comparatively enormous one last year. This year, no shoots again and it's flowering. 20180608_083712.jpg 20180608_083753.jpg I also have 'Bory,' 'H...

Re: Any one else making their own brew? other non-curricular

That's a beautiful rig, dependable. I'm envious. I've brewed on and off since 1995. I love it, but it's a lot of work. I haven't brewed this winter, but there's still hope. What styles do you brew? I tend to stick with ales, usually hoppy or dark. Do you keg? I still bottle, which is its own huge ha...

Re: What are consequences of insufficient light

Thank you both. Is it my imagination, or are your responses opposite one another? In both cases you're saying the plant should be fine, so I'm content with that. Thanks again.

What are consequences of insufficient light

Because I live in a small (~1.5-acre) clearing surrounded by tall conifers, I have only so many sunny spots for bamboos. As a result, I have planted some in places where they get less light than they might like. What should I expect and not expect from those plants - smaller size, fewer shoots, less...

Shoot variation on same plant

Hello, all. My Ph. aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' is shooting, and I'm seeing a pattern similar to what I saw a couple of weeks ago on my Ph. edulis 'Gold Stripe.' The first shoots - seen to the left in the photo below - are very "pointy," having almost no sheath blades, where the shoots that ...

Re: Drip irrigation?

I'd definitely not want to go with pre-installed emitters, because many of them would be in places where I don't need to water. I know it's more work up front, but I'm willing to do it, because I think it will pay off over the long run. I see many diameters of tubing, 4mm, 1/4-inch, 1/2-inch, 5/8-in...

Re: Drip irrigation?

This is fantastic. Thank you. I've bought many things from AM Leonard over the years, and I've generally been very happy with them, so definitely look at what they've got. I did look into regular garden hose and soaker hose years ago, and I decided it was the couplings that would have killed me, bot...

Re: Drip irrigation?

Thanks, dependable. This is great stuff. Very encouraging. Soaker hoses were my first thought, but the plants are not contiguous, so there would need to be many alternating sections of soaker and regular hose. That would get pretty costly and be a ton of work both to build and to set up and remove e...

Drip irrigation?

Over the past four years, I've accumulated and planted 90+ bamboos - both clumpers and runners - spread out across 2 to 3 acres. Summers here in western Washington are very dry, so I have to water weekly if not more often from July through September. Dragging long chains of hoses around and then mov...

Re: Website

I agree with those above. Your previous site was fantastic - the photos, the identification tips, the hardiness data, all of it. I'd love to know more about different species' water and nutrient needs, too. And Brad, since it's archived, we can more or less restore what you had before if you want th...

Mine, too, as well as Van-isle's. See here: http://bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7227. Interesting that we're all in the same general area.
