Re: Awesome bamboo division tool!
Today I tried to divide a few Alphonse Karr and used only the b'root bar. No digging, no sawing and only cutting the culms on the edges to make working easier. Went around it twice then hacked/pried through the middle. A smaller bamboo (2'6" diameter) took me about two minutes of hard work to s...

Re: Awesome bamboo division tool!
I haven't, but looking at one online it would certainly do a better job than my crowbar did. I would guess that the b'root bar would make quicker work of divisions due the size of the head. It's not cheap but should be a buy it for life tool and really does a good job on large tree roots. Wouldn't b...

Awesome bamboo division tool!
I now have many large clumping bamboos on my property and divide them as I clear new fence line. For a few years I've been going at it with a reciprocating saw with 12" pruning blades, a shovel and a crowbar. I saw something called a b'root bar on amazon and decided to give it a try. If you're ...

Re: Propagation from cuttings
Ophiuchus, I've tried the method you linked as well as vertical culm placement with 1-3 nodes, aquaponic cloner and made a 4x4 raised bed with shade cloth and misters dedicated just to bamboo cuttings. 2 node vertical cuttings in the shaded/misted bed gave me my highest success rate...around 20-30%....

Re: Cut shoots in winter or leave?
Thanks for the replies. Potentially triggering new shooting was my concern, but not wasting energy on doomed shoots was what I was hoping for. This question was regarding only my Oldhamii hedge, which is starting to produce 2"+ diameter culms. Maybe I'll play around with a few plants and let th...

Cut shoots in winter or leave?
Last year was my first year growing bamboo, and my plants only seemed to stop shooting Nov.-Feb. The new shoots that developed in October and very early November all died. Should I cut new shoots that appear late in the year, or just let my plants do their thing?

Re: Is this Bambusa oldhamii?
Everything matches up to my untrained eye...shoots, size, culm sheath, growth pattern and I was assured by Old Oaks that their Oldhamii was ID'd properly. If I didn't have so many of them, I might have never had this trait manifest. I've been extremely aggressive with dividing a couple of plants, an...

Re: Is this Bambusa oldhamii?
Why does my first image always post properly, but subsequent images in the same post give links? I'm sure it's user err, but unsure of what I'm doing wrong.

Re: Is this Bambusa oldhamii?
All of my oldhamii were purchased from Old Oaks Nursery in Florida. They are upsizing even faster than I had hoped. All were purchased as one gallon plants, and the first were planted early May 2016. In just over a year the first two planted have culms 16-18' tall, and one just pushed up a new culm ...

Re: Is this Bambusa oldhamii?
Digging up an old dead thread here, but I wanted to comment that my oldhamii do exhibit a zig-zag pattern in the smaller culms. All culms over 1" diameter are straight, but my smaller culms sometimes (not always...and not usually) zig-zag. I have 38 oldhamii plants at this point, 5 of which hav...

Re: Bamboo ID please
Thank you for taking the time to educate me on all of this. I had no idea how useful culm sheaths could be in proper ID of bamboo. I feel like I just earned 1 credit hour in Bootany and owe you tuition!

Re: Bamboo ID please
Great info and links Glen. My plants seem to match the description that you linked perfectly: "Culms 1–3 m, 3–5 mm in diam.; internodes solid. Branches usually bent downward, bow-shaped. Culm sheath slanted along one side, apex asymmetrically arched-convex. Ultimate branches with 13–23 leaves; ...

Re: Bamboo ID please
So almost every Chinese Goddess for sale online has larger leaves than my bamboo. The sellers who have contacted me back with those larger leaf plants all confirm they aren't solid culms. The plant that I divided looked exactly like this bamboo's neglected twin: https://www.plantdelights.com/product...

I've been searching and can't find any other solid culm small multiplex with tiny leaves. Does anyone know of one?

Be careful out there!
I had a bunch of trees felled on my property yesterday. The owner of the company was very friendly and obviously knew his stuff. He must have told me "safety first" 3 times...an hour later he was waiting to be airlifted for probable broken pelvis/possible broken lower back. 30+ years exper...
