Re: Need help identifying
Wow, the similarities are striking. I definitely seems like this is Rubro that is being sold as Vivax. I will be ready next spring to get some pics of the young shoots, Thanks!

Re: Need help identifying
I know it happens quite often in the nursery industry, but it’s still frustrating. I know many people do not care but for the ones that do, it’s unfortunate. Also almost no one in my area grows bamboo nor has much knowledge beyond the basic info. Klyn has been a great source for YG, Spectabilis, Nud...

Re: Need help identifying
My main reason for thinking it is not Vivax is the lack of spots on the culm sheaths. Also I’m growing Vivax that I obtained via Dave Andrews and the 2 plants seem very different. I just wanted to be cautious because I’m selling these to retail customers. Next spring I’ll try and get pics of the you...

Need help identifying
Hi, this particular Phyllostachys is labeled by a grower as Vivax. But to me, there’s no way it could actually be Vivax. Any ideas of what it may actually be? It’s growing at Klyn Nursery in NE Ohio. Not sure if anyone is familiar with them. They grow many running bamboos so I’m not sure how or if t...

Re: P. Henon?
I don’t think she had any Bissetii at her house. She was only growing about 7 varieties. I remember that she did have nuda as well as Henon. I know she originally purchased them from Dave Andrews so I’m assuming the IDs were correct. You never know tho! I appreciate the input!

P. Henon?
I dug this bamboo out of a grove in DC about 3 years back. The woman claimed it was Henon. It has overwintered here in Zone 6 Rochester NY much better than i expected. This has me wondering if it is in fact not Henon! I don't have much experience with Henon, but to me these shoots look a little like...

Re: Harbin or Harbin Inversa?
Thanks for all the info Brad! I guess I’ll just sit back and enjoy the weirdness and see what happens haha. I’m working on planting a bunch of different Phyllostachys this spring here as I just moved last fall to a house with 5 acres. I just brought back a bunch of divisions from Dave Andrews this w...

Re: Harbin or Harbin Inversa?
I can definitely feel the vertical grooves on the culms. Any advice for success with this variety? More sheltered location, more manure etc.?

Harbin or Harbin Inversa?
I purchased a plant locally labeled as phyllostachys aureosulcata harbin inversa. I'm not too familiar with this variety or the other variety harbin, Looking at photos online I was questioning whether this plant I purchased was actually harbin inversa. I know from reading on this forum that harbin i...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Rochester, NY (Zone 6A)
I have acquired some of the aureosulcatas this year and am very excited! The only reason for not growing any yet is because i have been unable to find a source with some sizable plants. I prefer to dig out larger transplants rather than order small mail order plants. Varieties I now have to try! -YG...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Rochester, NY (Zone 6A)
Yes, my bamboo definitely took a hit this winter. I will post photos later this spring of how well everything bounces back. This year the lowest temp was -6. But we had a week and a half of very cold single digit lows with some wind and snow mixed in. The 2 Phyllostachys that look the best this wint...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Rochester, NY (Zone 6A)
phyllostachys atrovaginata - Most of the plant has leaf burn. Too soon to tell if any of the culms have top killed. Phyllostachys viridis 'Robert Young' - Entire Plant has Top Killed fargesia rufa - Minimal Leaf burn. Very Green! I have had this bamboo in the ground for 3 years and it has done very ...

Re: Growing Bamboo in Rochester, NY (Zone 6A)
phyllostachys decora - Entire plant has leaf burn. Culms seem to have died back as well. Not certain but that is how it appears right now. phyllostachys nigra henon - Entire Plant has leaf burn. All Culms are top killed except surprisingly a whip shoot that grew late summer. That has survived and is...
