Re: Cool Coastal Climate

Definitely visit Tradewinds in Gold Beach. Gib pointed out a few Bambusa he's been trying there when I visited. As others have said, it's just not warm enough for satisfactory growth of Bambusa. On the other hand, Borinda lushuiensis is stunningly beautiful and as large as many Bambusa species (thou...

Re: Purple culms

Your plants are Phyllostachys aurea, not a Fargesia. Phyl. aurea can behave as a clumper in climates with cool summers like the PNW, so many people mistake it for a clumper, and the Olympic Peninsula has cool summers even compared to the rest of the PNW. But it is a runner, not a true clumper. I wou...

Re: Chusquea gigantea flowering

Well fudge. I just planted gigantea 2 years ago!

Oh well. Nothing I can do about it if they do flower. Haven't noticed anything yet, but things are just starting to grow here.

Re: Fargesia scabrida shooting

The scabrida I planted in Fall of last year is shooting, too! Just one for now. It was a pretty stressed division. Hopefully there are more shoots on the way. 20180302_105147.jpg Rufa is shooting, too, in its third season. Lots more shoots, but this one was the easiest to photograph. 20180302_110555...

Wufeng, the colors in the second to last picture (close-up of the culms) are beautiful! Windborne, those number 9 photos are great, too!

Re: Fargesia sp. Jiuzhaigou IX photos?

I kept checking this thread on my tablet and the screen keyboard would hide what I was typing, so I meant to reply on my desktop and kept forgetting. It's been hard even finding information on 9. For every link on a search page to 9, there's usually 10 or more links for 1 or one of the other clones....

Re: First bamboo you obtained

It was only a few years ago, but I've already forgotten if my very first was the Sasa hayatae from a friend, or the trio of Fargesia (robusta, nitida, and dracocephala 'Rufa') from the local nursery. Whichever was first, the other was acquired not long after. The 'Rufa' is probably the one that real...

Re: Fargesia sp. Jiuzhaigou IX photos?

Thanks for sharing your photos, Wind-born! I'm impressed with the height increase in that summer photo! You must be keeping it happy. Good to see the color of an unstressed plant in the ground, provided it has enough sunlight. The only one I've seen is a rather stressed specimen in a pot in a friend...

That is lovely! I'm glad it has proved hardier for you than the cs 1046. I'm looking forward to this and others from the KR series becoming available in the U.S.A., however long that takes...[/quote] I can probably help you out my friend. Canada to USA is easy. Sorry, looking for photos of number 9, not number 4, though I'd be happy to see your number 4, too!

Fargesia sp. Jiuzhaigou IX photos?

Has anyone had this in the ground for a few years? I would love to see recent photos. I can't find much on image searches and what does come up is often another form of Jiuzhaigou. Saw a potted specimen in a friends greenhouse and it was almost as colorful as Jiuzhaigou I.

The only Picture I found is 3 years old and during Winter. The plant is much bigger now. Steffen 20141223_153102_small.jpg That is lovely! I'm glad it has proved hardier for you than the cs 1046. Re: Introduction

Thanks for the welcomes, Van-Isle and dependable. I'll get around to posting photos of my little beginner collection eventually. Almost everything is still small now and hard to take good photos of. This forum being slow kind of fits my pace right now. I've got a bad case of winter doldrums (even th...

Re: Looking for Indocalamus tesselatus

Yeah, that's a pretty ugly Indo tess. Looks like it's in a pretty exposed location, which might account for part of it. However, Alabama is a very different climate from mine. Everything I've seen and read indicate that it's a much shorter plant in climates like the PNW and England, and there are pl...

As far as I. hamadae vs. I. tess, I'd rather have the shorter form.
