Re: Whitening of Canes during spring

I took two divisions of vivax a couple of years ago. Each rootball was probably over 100 pounds. I transplanted them pretty close to eachother. On one of the divisions, the culms turned the same color as yours, and within a month or two they were dead. Nothing has ever emerged from underground from ...

Re: Help identifying

I agree with you on that. 10 year old vivax should be at least twice that diameter.

Re: Help identifying

I am inclined to think it is Vivax. The elongated pictures seem to be causing some distortion, but the upper culm sheaths/ shoot resembles Vivax.

David, thank you for your offer. I am unable to travel at the moment, but I will gladly make the trip if my situation changes for the better. I always do enjoy reading your posts, and seeing the updates on your bamboo.

Re: Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory' flowering in Issaquah, WA

I have read some reports of various nigra forms flowering over the last couple of years, so there is at least some sporadic flowering going on for sure. I have the regular nigra form, and it is not showing any signs yet. It is still quite young though.

Vivax transplant update.

I dug a couple of divisions from my old property in 2019. The double culm division died shortly after transplant. No shoots produced in 2020 from surviving division. Now getting a look at the first shoots since the dig.

Is this bamboo readily available anywhere in the United States? I have found sources for it overseas, but having trouble finding it in the states.

Re: growing Moso in the USA

I think my main issue was that the plant I started with was a small recent division. It was not stable. We also had an unusually dry summer that year. The odds were not in my favor from the start.

Re: growing Moso in the USA

I will probably end up trying it again. Will start out with a better plant next time. It seems to have a reputation for being finicky. Maybe its not as finicky as I have been led to believe. Just dont seem to be a lot of pictures of nice groves, considering the amount of people who have tried it.

growing Moso in the USA

I used to be active on this forum about ten years ago under a different user name. It was a very active forum then. People seemed to be planting moso left and right. So what ever became of all of this moso? I ask because I tried planting it last year. I thought I stood a decent chance of growing thi...
