Re: Not AGAIN! Phyllostacys Nigra flowering again.
I hope mine survives but I fear it won’t. I’d wanted black bamboo for years, decades actually but it was such an expensive plant and I don’t have much luck with pot plants. I eventually bought a spindly little pot of it in 2019 and then noticed some growing in a garden in my town that was flowering....

Re: Not AGAIN! Phyllostacys Nigra flowering again.
I read that it rarely has viable seeds. If that’s true then how come it doesn’t go extinct after flowering?

Not AGAIN! Phyllostacys Nigra flowering again.
My first post here in 2019 was about this bamboo flowering. At the time it was someone else’s bamboo growing by the roadside. It eventually died off. I had only just bought a small plant from the Facebook marketplace and thankfully mine didn’t flower, but now 5 years later it looks like it has. I’ve...

Re: Identity please? Not much to go on
Thanks for having a look at it. There’s only dead stumps left from the full grown canes. I’ll see if I can take some photos of them though. I’ve planted the 2 salvaged shoots in large pots, I’m thinking positive, that they will need them if they survive and recover. I’ve got a bit of land here and I...

Identity please? Not much to go on
I’m in Australia, down south, it’s not tropical here. There was a beautiful large stand of tall green bamboo growing at the back of a restaurant. I used to love looking at it. A couple of months ago the new owners had it buudozed. Today I went to see if anything could be salvaged and I managed to ge...

Re: Is everyone’s Phyllostachys Nigra Flowering?
hey all these years later, My phyllostachys nigra has still not flowered fortunately. did your bamboo survive its flowering? Yes, mine survived, it didn’t flower, but the original grove that caused me to write this thread in 2019 has all died. I’ve been watching for new shoots from the seeds but ha...

Re: Should I buy it?
If only they would have left the first branch on some of those culms...if it was a bargain, I'd buy it but not if the price approaches that of a potted one with foliage. It probably will be fine but the seller discounted the product a little I think. Looks more like TImor than Java. He’s asking $50...

Should I buy it?
I’ve seen an ad for clumping black bamboo for sale on the Facebook market place. It’s been chopped back so is just the root clumps with sawn off stalks. The seller doesn’t know what type it is, and neither do I. I believe the clumping types that are sold here in Australia are Java and Timor. Both of...

Re: Is everyone’s Phyllostachys Nigra Flowering?
The group flowering is not a myth, but there are occasions when groves can flower independently, usually due to stress, as already noted. There also may be cases where there are different cultivars of same species that do not flower at same time. You are correct that the flowering will vary with se...

I posted in 2019 that Phyllostacys Nigra was flowering in Australia. That particular stand all died.

Re: How do I know what bamboo I have?
Just wanted to pop back in to say my black bamboo is THRIVING! Last year was the first season growing season I’d had it and I’d get excited at each teeny tiny little sprout that would appear. Since then I’ve been feeding it the bloody water I’d rinse off the plastic packaging I get my supermarket me...

Re: How do I know what bamboo I have?
It’s definitely black. It has the groove on it. I’m in Australia, the summers can be very hot but the winters are quite cold. Frosts, very cold winds and temp close to 0°C, snows on the nearby hills occasionally but never quite here. I don’t think a more tropical bamboo would survive so I’m sure it’...

Re: How do I know what bamboo I have?
Yes it does have that. That’s how I identified it as Phyllostacys Nigra, but I’ve since found out there’s lots of different forms or cultivars. How do I know what mine is?

Re: Best time to repot Phyllostaccys Nigeria?
Thanks for this information. It makes sense. When I unpotted it I was rather bewildered and just hacked through where my secateurs were able to cut and hoped for the best. I’ll be a bit more thoughtful next time. I’m happy to say I had a good close look yesterday after posting here and I’ve discover...
