Re: RE: Oldhamii culms - black
Many of the exceptionally healthy oldhamiis in this area are similar in color around here. I would suggest yours is as well! Thanks. The plant is only 4 months in the ground. Everything above the fence line which is about 1.5 m tall is new. The plant had one small old culm and a new shoot when I bo...

Oldhamii culms - black
Has anyone got or seen an example of oldhamii culms going black? It's definitely not a case of sooty mould etc as it doesn't rub off and the plant is very healthy with two 8 cm culms shooting presently (sth hemisphere - fall). The culms in question are new shoots, about 30 days old and just beginnin...

Re: RE: Controlling clumping bamboo - oldhamii.
Check this link out: http://www.bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?p=7044#7044 Thanks Roy. I'll have to look at some method like that though it's going to cramp up the 1m area a bit to put in 24inch stones. It sounds like the tropical bamboos can smash up a masonry retaining wall then? I'm not sure wh...

Controlling clumping bamboo - oldhamii.
Hi all, I've finally been able to plant some bamboo out but I'm still fairly nervous about future control of these. The one I am most concerned about is oldhamii. I have a plant located close to a fence to block out a building. This is in a planter like space. One boundary is a masonry retaining wal...

Dendrocalamus minor - black culms.
Hi all, I've held off a bit on posting about this but I have a D. minor that appears to be developing dark brown to black culms. I'm wondering if this is a sport or possible cultivar. Other sp in this genus are known to have black varieties so this would not be terribly surprising really. I'll get s...

Dendrocalamus minor var Amoenus pictures.
Here are some photos of the D. minor amoenus that is in one of the local nurseries in Brisbane near where I live. I talked with the nursery staff and they said this specimen was planted in 2004 and now has culms about 50-60mm thick. I love the green, chalk, and tan tones in this bamboo. It's such a ...

RE: Free Bamboo
I am particularly fond of the amoenus variety and know of one spectacular specimen in Brisbane I will try and photograph when I see it next. I don't personally have one since they are quite exxy here ~$60 for a small container. I do have a D. minor though which I quite like for its very large leaves...

Bamboo litter = Mushroom substrate. Mmmm Mmmmm Good. Ive been wanting to get into woodloving edible mushroom cultivation. So far all my attempts at trying to get a clean agar isolate from store bought oysters have been unsuccessful. I seem to have a type of white mold that seems to get into everyth...

RE: The Bamboo Bug :)
I have another few Moso seedlings coming up. Some were very weak and yellow looking and several seeds that appeared as if they would come up successfuly expired. Moreover the ones pictured above were also beginning to struggle. I decided to take a risk and apply garden lime (ground limestone or calc...

RE: Winter damage observations
In our climate in Brisbane most young plants require shading in order to establish themselves. So rather than needing greenhouses we need shadehouses to grow all the plants we do. Many understorey type plants like my tropical palms for example require shading and when they were young I constructed a...

Bamboo litter.... comments?
Hi all, I was actually quite surprised by the amount of litter from sheaths and old leaves generated by even small bamboo plants that have been in my yard for 4 weeks or so. Obviously one wouldn't want to plant these next to pool area or where the litter can get into roof gutters. I suppose the bene...
