Re: Observations of Parvifolia over 13 years

Great info David. Just thought I’d chime in and offer my thoughts. With the work involved, health, job, kids, etc., etc., I stopped growing all the Phyllostachys except the parvifolia that came from Tennessee  . Mine was planted in 2008. I’ve found in western PA the bamboo has to be shielded f...

Re: Negative Post-Gazette article

Thank you guys so much for the quick responses. I was totally swamped today with work and trying to do some family stuff tonight while getting by on one leg (1 more month non weight bearing on crutches!). Anyway, I plan to follow up if I don't get a reply in a few days or see this guy take action on...

Negative Post-Gazette article

Hey guys - been awhile! I was looking at my local news and came across this article in my local paper: 'Green' bamboo not ideal for Pittsburgh area I emailed the author the below and if any of you have the time, please feel free to offer him your two cents as well. Bamboo does not have a strong foot...

Re: Stairs/bench project

For projects like this, I like spending more time with the challenge of making things work VS spending more up front time planning - amazing how much you can learn. Looks great Fred! - time to cover up the small timber retaining wall above it with bamboo to make it match - should keep you busy a bit...

Re: Help with selecting plants for layout

Finally added a field division of nuda and aureosulcata. With the heat and humidity this year, the only thing keeping the others from running back to China is lack of water....

Re: Mole Patrol

I used something similar at my old place when I had an outbreak a few years ago - could not tell that it was helping - I think for those particular pests, stomping on the holes and runs got them to vacate - or maybe it was the matriarch that I took out with the pellet gun. Regardless of what you try...

Re: Chinese Walking Stick video

Gil,
Can't give a high rating on the video - was looking and hoping for a closeup :P. Outside of no zoom-in on the culms (hint, hint) pretty nice for a camera phone - thanks for posting.....

Re: Steel handle shovels

For taking divisions I seriously sharpen an old flat landscaping shovel and hammer it through with a sledge. If you really have a lot to go through and its dry a buddy to hold the shovel will help. I've found nothing (in my younger days) that won't bend - have a 5' pry bar that I bent trying to get ...

Re: My new shoots are dying. Why?

In most cases especially with younger plants this is totally normal.

Re: C. sulcata - new leaf growth

looks great Fred - thanks for sharing all the pics

that isn't one I sent you in a trade is it? - for different reasons I ended up losing all my seedlings (gave away most) - looked like it was going to be a decent house plant.....

Markj,
How did the chusquea culeou fair when you hit -14c?
&
If you can get better pics, I'd like to see the robusta & r. wolong to compare. I have both, but 'wolong' early on seems like it is superior in both appearance and hardiness...

Thanks and looks great!

Re: Maturity throws my ID for a loop

I've seen the bissetti type white margins although not as pronounced, on aureosulcata. If you look at the last pic @ the nice red looking shoot, it also has the white margins. I'm thinking straight aurosulcata unless I was missing something you pros picked up. Rough sandpaper like culm test should p...

Re: Mulch

I was able to notice on many potted bamboo plants and certain shrubs/trees in my new landscape that the dyed mulch the landscape contractor used in our neighborhood was NOT good for the plants. It turned many plants a light green color in the heat of summer even with watering. Was not lack of nutrie...
