Re: Dendrocalamus Validus

I think mine is D peculiaris not D validus but yours makes me ponder getting one. I'm around 38 species I think but there are not many more out here I can find that I would like, I'm a bit terrified of D giganteaus as it will get quite large here!

Re: Shoot thread

I bought one about the same time I bought 3 straight Chungii and the Barbie produced 2"+ shoots in year 2 and it threw about a dozen of them before I moved. I always suspected it was not Barbie it was so much larger than the straight form. It's really a great bamboo, I bet yours keeps em coming...

Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?

Perhaps, I know that Jos knows the bamboo quite well, my notes indicate that he thought it had similar hardiness to Phy atrovaginata, for me it did not but my climate was quite different.

Re: Need help identifying

It stinks when it happens, my Schizostachyum jaculans has turned into Bambusa oldhamii - big difference between the two, I am fortunate that the planting site works for Oldhamii. I was drawn to the division in the nursery then saw on the tag that it was on my wish list so I grabbed it but I would ha...

Re: Need help identifying

Like I said, I think you are right and that sure looks like Rubro, one of only a few bamboo that I think I can ID by culms and overall look it is distinct enough. Another Ohio bamboo nursery showed me their grove of Dulcis which I knew for certain was Bissetii, and I know they got their plants from ...

Re: Need help identifying

I know Klyn's a bit, bought wholesale from them...why do you think this is not Phy vivax? I will say that at a glance to me it looks like Rubromarginata but there is really not enough to go on.

BTW I also think it is not Vivax

Re: 1 Year Transplant - 6 Bamboos

The person I sold to in Oct sold it again in March for a nice profit and that person has contacted me. I advised them to kill off all but a few of the clumping forms, seeing her photos was painful, lots of drought stressed plants.

Re: 1 Year Transplant - 6 Bamboos

I've been wondering how you did with those plants. Nice work, too bad we destroyed the Damarapa. I hope that the B nana gets going, given that I almost threw it away it looks pretty darn good! My B nana here is blowing my mind with how fast it is sizing up and producing new canes quite regularly, I ...

Re: Dendrocalamus Validus

I'm curious about the red as I've never read that about D validus but out here the bamboo folks call red bamboo is D sikkimensis which I have and the mature clump mine came from was a real beauty - not red, but orange/golden with shiny waxy culms and really interesting shoots - the shoot leaves look...

Re: Dendrocalamus Validus

How tall is the shoot? Your current weather is very important. If only a few inches tall then I think that if you are gentle, careful and have compatible weather you can move it now but if it is hot and dry where you are then wait. I did the same with 3 bamboo a few months ago, one had an active sho...
