Does anyone have an idea what variety this may be? Looks like a Dendrocalamus, but a bit too smooth and green for an Asper and too many aerial roots to be Giganteus, although I could be wrong.

Propagating Petung Hitam (Black Asper) from branch cuttings
Any suggestions for propagating petung hitam from branch cuttings? I have several small clumps with well developed branches, although most are less than 12 months old. Is this to young? I have seen growers put cuttings under plastic in the shade. Is this a good idea? What about media? I have rice hu...

Sunn hemp and biochar to prepare for bamboo plantation
In Thailand I am preparing an area of about 1.4 acres for a small plantation. These will be timber species. D. Asper. D. Gigantues and a little Guadua. There is already a lot of bamboo growing in the area, as the climate is well suited, however the soil has most likely been depleted from agriculture...

D. Asper growing wild in Thailand (more pics)
Here are some pics I took recently of Asper growing in Thailand. These culms and shoots look really big to me, I'd say over 9". I'd be interested in feedback on the pics. The pic below shows old growth bamboo, as can be seen by the lichen. These culms are deep in the forest, so harvesting is no...

The rusty shoots maintain this color even when the reach full height, which I don't see on the varieties suggested. I will post some more pics in about 1 week.

RE: What's this? Tropical bamboo ID
I've been told be a knowledgeable source that this isn't a tulda. I've also had no luck trying to find the identity by using the local name. A local told me this variety can grow to over 4" and is resistant to borer attacks, so it's very good for construction. Below is another pic of the shoot,...

Re: RE: Bamboo Books
The other day I bought a small book titled Bamboo Style, but by different authors. It's full of pics with very little text, just info on the location of the shots. Being less than $12 I would recommend it.svendrix wrote:

RE: D. Asper pics from Thailand
This is very useful info and just what I wanted to hear. I'm looking to build a house with asper, so know that there's plenty of 4 yr old culms around is great. Regarding the adventurous roots, I've noticed them on several varieties. I wouldn't be surprised if they are taking moisture, because the h...

Info on bamboo house building
I'm planning on building a house from bamboo and am looking for sources of specific information. There's a lot of general info around, however I can find little with clear details on joinery and design. Can anybody here point me in the right direction? I discussion forum would be great, but I can't ...

RE: What's this? Tropical bamboo ID
After checking pics in the gallery of the Bambusa tulda, I think this is a definite possibility. The leaves are also a similar size. The only thing is it's green, whereas my shoots are a rust color.
I will take some more pics when I visit the property on the weekend.

Re: D. Asper pics from Thailand
http://bambooweb.info/images/bamboo/age.jpg Comments: Your D. asper tends to have adventious roots on the nodes a lot higer up the culms than does mine. Mine tends to have them on the basal nodes, but not high up like your does. This bamboo is in the rainforest in the middle of the monsoon season. ...

At least it sounds like you are putting your time to good use. I'm supposed to be working, but instead I spend my day searching the web for info on building with bamboo! I'm living in Bangkok, but have close to 2 acres a short walk from Thailand's largest national park. My property has lots of bamb...

D. Asper pics from Thailand
Here's some pics I took recently of D. Asper growing close to my property in Central Thailand. These are growing in a forest, each year culms are harvested, but plenty remain. In the future I would like to build a house from bamboo, probably D. Asper. I'm interested to hear from others with experien...
