Re: Bory flowering

David, Thanks for the reply. it would be my intention to propagate the seeds in pots but i can collect them when they fall. i like the idea of having many small plants as it's so hard to make small divisions that are viable. i wonder if the Nigra will flower soon if the Henon, Megurochiku and Bory h...

Bory flowering

Hi all, I havent been here in years but thought I'd stop by to say my Bory is flowering and ask: when is the best time/when to collect the seeds? i wouldn't mind growing up some small plants to see if I can do it. It's such a strong variety

Re: Bamboo Mite Reality Check

given how rapidly they reproduce I would not be surprised if the bamboo mites up there are not only more cold resistant, but have evolved as such. down here they seem to have population booms & busts, which I thought had something to do with the weather but maybe not. my latest treatments so far...

Re: Dark specks only on the moso

I get the same spots on my young mosos (the ones that still have big leaves); but the more mature plant has none of these spots. They are growing in the same conditions but I have no idea if they are the same cultivar...and what's up with the big leaves on the little guys? Maybe it has something to ...

Re: Bad news in Prince Edward Island

the rain is nice though. nothing like clean air. by resistant i mean not proof...like a nylon rain jacket. sorry about the confusion. the colonies on the dulcis & moso were sparse and easily pruned away but the damage looked similar although more on the edges and mid-leaf. i suppose this if beca...

Re: Bad news in Prince Edward Island

Shmu, What I have noticed is that any bamboo will pick up mites (see some recent posts for photos). Thay are even on my bashania fargesii in very small numbers; but they also seem to have a much easier time really taking over certain species. I have a castillon that they have really taken to right i...

mite damage on Bashania Fargesii

i am very disappointed to see this although the damage is minimal, had thought the hairy b. fargesii would be immune.

Re: Aureosulcata Flowering

Bashania Fargesii may be quite hardy. Mine puts up shoots all year..it also runs like crazy! I can spare some next spring if you can't find it elsewhere (i am roughly between bamboo garden and booshoot).

Re: Bamboo Mite Reality Check

wow that's bad! looks like what they do to s. fatuosa...and i am saying that from here in mite central. is the plant somewhere near a heat source where the mites don't freeze off in the winter?

Re: does imidacloprid work as well as disulfoton?

yes I have used avid in the past but i live in the city and do not wish to spray. i would rather just do without anything than spray. what i was using before was a granular type systemic that you can just put on the soil for a more times release. i also understand this is not considered as effective...

does imidacloprid work as well as disulfoton?

there was a sytemic put out by bayer that worked well for me to keep the mites off that had disulfoton and imidacloprid but is now unavailable. they have another similar granular product with imidacloprid but the label does not list mites, while the one with the disulfoton did. i am interested in th...

Re: FYI 1 year moso & dulcis mite test results

do you have mites in NS? i dont think the mites we have would survive in your area. if we have a cold dry spell in the winter here there is a noticeable decrease in mite activity the next year (cold and dry for us is a few nights around -10 c). i only tested these two because they are reputed to hav...

FYI 1 year moso & dulcis mite test results

after reading that moso and dulcis are mite proof i decided to place some small plants (one of each) under (and in direct contact with) a heavily infested mature grove of black. it has been more than a year since then and i can definitely say-and prove they are not mite proof yet are resistant. ther...

Re: Phyllostachys atrovaginata shoots breaking in half

mine break too. i tried a splint last year as an experiment to see if the top could survive with only a fraction of the culm intact. it did and fully leafed out...until snow weight bent my splint and the top died off.
