Re: Winter Kill
Would have to say the most leaf burned bamboo I had happened to be phyllostachys dulcis. Never expected leaf damage in zone 8 Texas so didn't do anything to protect them but it happened to get down to a winter low of 11F in Texas. Guess the biggest factor was that this was planted in the ground in O...

Re: About a year
Got one of my moso seedlings to have the golden yellow groove which is the exact inverse of the bicolor but it also happened to have variagated leaves too. Oddly unlike the previous gold stripe variations I've grown a decade ago, this one appears to be more vigorous than the plain green ones. https:...

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
Rich Reitz who has been on this forum has pretty much every species I had initially and John Pedlow who actually lives around the Niagara falls areas has a lot of them too. I've actually spread out a lot of the bamboos into the local area before leaving but don't know how whatever is still left is d...

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
That is definitely true that energy spent releafing takes away from new shoots. So far in SE Texas 8B, the lowest temperatures have dipped into the low 20s which has managed to halt new leaf growth and stunt shoot growth but nowhere close to being cold enough to leaf burn temperate running bamboos. ...

Re: S brachycladum leaps
Even if you don't have a whole lot of soil or compost on top of the top of your rock, if you have mostly lava rock which water can permeate, chances are that the roots can also grow through the rocks. I dug out a small pecan tree and found that many of its roots were able to grow right into the lime...

Re: Shoot thread
Unknown #2 might be dendrocalamus sinicus dragon bamboo since your shoot looks very similar to my sinicus shoots. That bigger shoot that is fatter than every culm in the clump currently is about 1.5 inches in diameter. Since the picture was taken, it has shot up to 2-3X the height in that picture in...

Re: source for Shanghai 3
Have you ever tried contacting Daphne Lewis who is in the southeast and sells bamboo shoots every spring? She is somewhere in the southeast and you should be able to contact her through Facebook. She does have a mature grove of S3 and just about every other species which is good for shoot production...

Re: Watering
Seems like having clay soil, it doesn't seem to matter if I water every day with a couple of buckets since we have a heat wave where it reaches 90F plus every day and there hasn't been any rain in a few months, usually very sunny every day. The shoots that were trying to emerge from the in ground d ...

Re: Can you layer bamboo like this drawing?
I am trying it on java black bamboo now, but haven't seen any signs of growth from the nodes after a month. The only way this is possible is if there are dormant root buds at the base of the branches which you might be able to tell by pulling back the sheaths. Can't hurt to try. https://www.facebook...

Re: Kudzu
You can buy it on eBay for pretty cheap but if you are trying to get tubers that can be harvested, you will need to have a heated greenhouse because kudzu is not Frost tolerant, and the growing season in New York is not enough to get you starchy tubers. I did try growing this stuff about 10 years ag...

Re: HOW DO CLUMPERS GROW?
Temperate clumping types are generally smaller and generally produce 1-2 rounds of shoots each year slowly expanding the size of the clump in overall space and height. They are not hard to control at all. Tropical clumpers will produce a rhizome neck from the base of the rhizome bulb of a mature cul...

Re: Help to identify seedlings?
Definitely phyllostachys edulis moso bamboo since it has furry culms and leaves, long and dark long oral setae, and very grassy like thin walled culms. Tropical species which I'm growing now in Hawaii look much different as they generally have more solid culms even as seedlings, and have much bigger...

Re: Alabama Gulf Coast - clumping bamboo
If anyone wants the rest of my tropical bamboo seeds, they can PM me. I got 10 species, and all of them had surprisingly good germination rates, and now I have more seedlings than I can handle so I don't mind sharing the good stuff. The bambusas literally germinated within 2 days. I have bambusa man...

Re: Over Wintering
Putting a bucket of water underneath for temperature control, mothballs to prevent mice from eating the bamboo, as well as a light color, but airtight tarp should get you good results. If it gets too cold for too long, even tarps won't work, but I have has my most success with white over wintering b...

Growing bamboo in a tropical climate
During the hottest part of summer, temperatures usually range from 88F to 73F, and during the winter, it is more like 82F-66F so we never really even get cool here in the hotter part of Hawaii. I tried growing moso seedlings about half a year ago, but they never performed anywhere near as well as th...
