How long will the tiny bunches of leaves that form beneath the mower level stay alive? It seems that when I remove a shoot that's in the lawn, that little tuft keeps growing forever. Or is that only because the main grove is still feeding it?

I don't have experience with a grove of this scale and age, but I have one main question: how likely is it that every single rhizome will be removed, especially the ones far from the grove? Don't assume it's dead yet -- there have been years when every leaf has gone brown (like this year), but then the culms leaf out again in the spring. One it starts warming up a bit (March maybe) take a look at the branches to see if leaf buds are expanding. If so, don't cut it down as it's not dead!

Just let those create whatever little branches or shoots or leaves that they want to -- it's a good thing and shows that the plant is alive! (And wanting to store energy so it can start getting bigger again)

Is that a pond with a liner? I'd be concerned about rhizomes poking holes.

Also remember that bamboo drops leaves and sheaths most of the year (it seems).

My Propinqua 'Beijing' was removed a few years ago, but escaped rhizome remnants still put up thin shoots every year -- those meter-tall droopy ones. Every one of them is covered in flowers still.

My groves are all smaller so can't really support big flocks, but they're definitely winter night roosts for the local birds, mainly sparrows and the like. It's noisy in a satisfying way IMO.

Will that guano be the only fertilizer applied? (or will it replace what you normally use?)

I don't have any experience with tropical bamboos, but I would suggest trying less water, especially if there is any indication that the soil is staying soggy. Maybe even stop watering altogether. Or stop watering part of the hedge and see if that part starts doing better. If this is a fungal issue,...

Are you able to pull any of the culms down and tarp over them? I did that last year when we had an arctic blast -- grabbed a few smaller culms, tied them together, then pulled them down and tied to a stake. Then tarped over that. The idea is to keep some culms with green leaves... better than topkill!

Word of warning about the tamper tool: if you put it into the ground upright while taking a rest, make sure nothing is around it.
I did this a few years back and the thing was slightly off-center and toppled over after a few minutes (so heavy)... right onto my camera.

Have you tried a regular post hole digger/tamping bar? Not as large a "cutting" end as the b'root bar, but I've found mine to be quite useful in cutting and prying up divisions. Was wondering how it compared. (1/3 the price of the b'root bar too)
