Laz, what sort of lighting conditions are you growing in? I'm glad to see you have it against a fence, as I'm considering the same. In what cardinal direction is the plant facing? Hi wn ... shes facing west and seems to be doing better than divisions in a more shady position - but to be honest she ...

Does anyone have any first hand experience with growing Fargesia Scabrida? I'm thinking of getting some, have read tons about it, and would be interested in hearing from anyone who has grown it. Just FYI, I'm in USDA 10a / Sunset zone 16. My favourite Fargesia by a country mile .... but that's over...

All my Fargesias' have been shooting since about the end of 1st week in February, except for the nitida variants.

Does anyone have any opinions or feedback on choosing between: Borinda papyrifera Himalayacalamus hookerianus Thamnocalamus crassinodus SF Bay Area, zone 9-10 (depending on source). Pretty flexible on location in terms of sunlight. I'm growing all three .... but I'm zone 7b... over in the UK ....so...

HPS - High pressure sodiums ... will give more heat per watt - but both aren't cheap to run!
- try using 250's instead. MH would be better tbo ... as it's blue end spectrum ..... HPS tend to be better for flowering plants!

One of the few advantages of living in a maritime climate with generally crappy summers ....
My scabridas love it! 2nd year in the ground with a 50% increase in height this year, both have also started a 2nd flush of new culms in the last couple of weeks.
