Re: Is this recommended bamboo application feasible????
Your climate is very different from mine, so what works well for me may not work well for you; that said 2.5 ft for the width of the planting bed is at least 1 foot to small. Avoid the open clumpers in the Yushiana genus, and focus on the compact fargesias instead. Thats about the best general advic...

Re: Narrow Bamboo Fence, Fragesia jiuzhaigou vs. Fragesia Ni
Speaking from direct experience, a 2 gallon mountain clumping bamboo that does not have variegated leaves takes 5 years to get near suggested trade dimensions.needmore wrote:Also for screening you should start with LARGE ones or wait a very long time for 2 gallon size or smaller to reach a decent screen.

Re: Narrow Bamboo Fence, Fragesia jiuzhaigou vs. Fragesia Ni
In your other post I tried to tell you a western exposure along with 4+ hours of sunlight will make most fargesia weep in our environment. F. robusta 'campbell' is a good choice due to its thick culms and relatively small leaves. I have it and its rather upright all year long with 5-6 hours of sunli...

Re: Narrow Bamboo Fence- suggestions, North NJ.
F nitida and F. Jiuzhaigou are very similar in overall form; but culm colour, vigor, and primary branch angle do differ. Culm colour comes from sun damage and a culm that gets no sun or is covered in leaves will stay green. The overall form is a tightly packed round weeping clump 3 to 6ft wide and 8...

I'd wager survival shoots if there are any viable eyelets. Pamper the potted plants and be rather patient, has you may have to wait awhile to see anything.

ShmuBamboo, that behavior makes complete sense I'll await next years cycle to see if its simply a response to top kill.

Re: Phyllostachys Viridglaucescen Bamboo Growing Problems
At 53º N sunlight or a lack there of will be the greatest issue. Your plant is native to a climate with a much stronger sun angle so I'd expect "clumping bamboo" like behavior and a much slower overall growth rate. Your climate is much more suited to the Fargeisa, Borinda, Yushina, and Chu...

Re: Cold damage winter 2013/2014
We have no reports in the spreadsheet on cold damage this winter for the following bamboos: all F. Jiuzhaigou numbers Indocalamus latifolius Phyllostachys angusta Phyllostachys arcana Sasa oshidensis Sasa palmata Sasaella masamuneana 'Albostriata' You can pm me if you have data. johnw F. sp Jiuzhai...

Re: Fargesia robusta winter damage
I see green leaves at the base of the bamboo clump. I would expect shoots between June and July of this year, based on how large you're plants already are and how vigorous F. robustsa can be. I'd leave the old culms up to provide support for the new shoots. Prune the dead growth after the old shots ...

Re: Bamboo ID, use for houseplant?
I'd guess Yushania genus and discourage against keeping it as a houseplant. If it is indeed a temperate clumping bamboo it will have issues with your indoor climate, namely humidity and nighttime temps being too warm.

On the right of this picture you will find a 4 year old Fargesia robusta 'Campbell', for reference the fence is 8 feet tall I posted it because our climates are nearly identical.

Re: I was sold this as a fargesia, is it?
I'll climb along on the bandwagon here too, what branching/ leaf action I can see plus the persistent culm sheaths I'd wager it is a member of the Pseudosasa genus. P. Japonica being the most common of the Pseudosasa's makes it the best candidate.
