Re: Variegated Tomato

How Weird! I was just sitting in front of the tv just now after posting that last bit and an episode of House Hunters came on and the couple was from Los Gatos. The woman talked about taking vegetable classes at Love Apple Farm, and they even showed the sign for the nursery. I had to rewind just to ...

Re: Variegated Tomato

Last year I spent a mint buying a large variety of heirloom tomatoes. This year I just wanted some six packs to keep the price low and hopefully get some more reliable yields. I have a history of looking for (and finding) variegates, but I've kind of moved away from that. But when I was standing at ...

Variegated Tomato

I was out at the Farmer's market today, picking up some vegetable plants. I found a 6pack of Cherokee Purple tomatoes with one variegated plant in it. A quick google search when I got home showed me that there are one (or two?) variegated tomatoes out there. But from what I found they have small fru...

Kudzu bugs?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sWtAELoa2Q&feature=related So, yesterday I read about this new invasion for the first time. They come from China and eat kudzu and soybean leaves. Wisteria and other ornamental legumes were mentioned as a target. But I watched another video on youtube where the l...

It is pretty. I have a little bit of that on my new growth this year to. Its something that Spectabilis does on a fairly regular basis, I think. But still pretty.

Re: Another

I had some luck germinating seeds..... then leaving them in hot sun, and cooking them .... Got more, no such luck, since sowing em in Dec. Probably one of my favorite trees. They tend to love water. Jeff, you hear of this place? Also, your avatar is awesome... http://www.dawnredwood.org/ Theyre try...

Re: Could these be Dulcis ?

In that case, I'll probably skip trying to get another division from her. Its really hard to get a good division from such a large grove any way. And, I kind of like to know what I'm getting. Futhermore, I don't have a lot of room for more bamboos anyway, particularly if my parvifolia performs up to...

I've planted a couple of these. They grow really fast and are one of those "living fossil" type organisms. Fun tree!

Re: Boo shoots for 2012

I just wanted to say that Brad's photos are really nice. There are a couple that belong in gardening magazines promoting goodwill toward bamboo. Its really interesting about the hispida. How long has it been there? Could it really be a clumper? And I like the way your security detail matches your pa...

Re: Boo shoots for 2012

Found shoots on Borinda angustissima. They were pretty small compared to a shoot that was put up late fall and aborted.

Re: Boo shoots for 2012

Found several more S. fastuosa 'Viridis' shoots just starting today. Yeah. Still waiting for any shoots from Ph. glauca 'Yunzhu'. Planted in '09. No shoots in '10 or '11. That is a bit surprising to hear, mine shoots like mad most years, this year thus far it has also put up the fattest culm at 1.5...
