Re: First frost, and I've almost missed it

Well, today it was the last day I left anything unprotected. Everything was rock solid this morning, even the soil in the pot (at least the upper layer and all around the walls) was mostly frozen. I hope bamboo is still OK. Today I'll tarp it, or move it somewhere safer. http://static.mojefotke.si/d...

Re: First frost, and I've almost missed it

I'll do just that. I am a bit worried about overheating if there's no snow that would cover tarped plants. Temperatures during winter can be as low as -20C (highly unlikely, perhaps in one winter out of ten), day temperatures are usually just a little bit under or above freezing, morning temperature...

Re: First frost, and I've almost missed it

Well, not really good thing to count on snow insulation. Last year for example, we've had only few inches of snow and the soil looked totally dry on places when there was no snow. Two weeks of -10C (-5C during the day) with some wind as well, took all moisture out of the soil. If last year's winter ...

First frost, and I've almost missed it

Several days ago still with temperatures around 30C, now we've had our first frost this year. Looks like bamboo season is over this year. http://static.mojefotke.si/f70000f6b4d3311d214f3a6ecbe921391ed6f487.JPG http://static.mojefotke.si/7cbd97254883e2aacc7bd5c6b5aadb57816dc1ed.JPG http://static.moje...

Re: What are these leaf spots?

Bamboothew, one other reason could be the cause that Phyllostachys nidularia didn't show such signs. Like heteroclada it can tolerate soil that is too wet. I kind of doubt that but my bamboos did show some shock that could be related to that in the beginning of spring when we've had rain all the tim...

Re: What are these leaf spots?

Keep us informed, please. :) Strange with the leaf on picture I've attached earlier is, that it didn't change a bit. It did not get more yellow until now and we've had quite a few mornings around 2C (first frost should be here in a couple of days too). I'm new to bamboo growing and I don't feel happ...

Re: What are these leaf spots?

Similar if not the same problem with my Moso seedlings. Some parts look the same as yours, and some have scattered spots like these on photo below. There are no mites, no aphids, no other hungry critters visible on any of bamboos. I've been connecting this with morning fog, we've had lately, but it ...

Re: How long does it take a rhizome to fill a one gallon pot

I've received rhizome division (I think it's Phyllostachys Aurea) this year and planted it into plastic barrel, which most likely holds around 100 liters. After three shootings, during spring, summer and early fall, i've noticed it started bumping into plastic walls. This rhizome seems almost as thi...

Re: random varigation

I've found one branch on Borinda fungosa seedling, that was cream white colored. All leafs on it were the same color and only that branch was different. The branch is still growing and I'm waiting to see if any kind of variegation occurs on other culms or branches. So far, there was not even one lea...

Re: Droopy vivax

I think it's perfectly normal. Each leaf has some water on it and together they weight much more than they normally do. You can fix bamboo culm somehow to help them stay erect. :)

When foliage dries a bit, it will go back to normal. No worries.

Re: Strange growth of Moso seedling

Hi Guys.... I also have the same thing to mention that there is possibility of some ornamental grass seeds was there which gives you the same results..... It wasn't ornamental grass. I've isolated it and planted it outside to see what becomes of it. At first it didn't grow much, but when it adapted...

Re: Can bamboos overwinter in a pot grown outside? 0-5F

I think it would work if it's cold enough. If temperature during winter doesn't rise too much and is constantly at or below 10°C, I'm sure bamboo would be happy and would shoot nicely next spring.

Re: Dave's New Bamboo Bug Sprayer

Mites don't like wet weather. Humid air makes them suffer and they thrive in dry warm weather. Here we can have problems with mites indoors and rarely outside, because there's usually enough rain to keep them controlled. As far as I know, the most important factor is humidity. Perhaps winter tempera...

Re: fargesia nitida

I've sown P. edulis seeds two weeks ago, just to see if they would come out. I bought them this march and I've kept them in the fridge. Some of them sprouted after no more than 7 days, and they are growing faster than they did when I germinated them this March. If you kept them in the fridge, you mi...
