Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
Here is a pic where you can see new branches firing but my gut says that this particular bamboo will not work this way but I'll try anyway.

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
Hormone would not likely help. Bare root and culm cuttings need a good start and heavy soil is not a good start. I recently thinned some culms and chopped them into sections, then I placed them on a couple inches of mulch and then covered them with several inches more. They are in about 8-10" o...

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
Andy, in my experience it is tough to get browning bamboo to recover unless it ends up producing survival shoots. I think I would go ahead and pot the brown ones to see what happens. In general, I think bare root bamboo is not ready to go inground and for sure not in clayey soil. Next time maybe sor...

It looks so different! At least it exposed them to more sun in winter so they can acclimate more gently.

Re: Unknown Bamboo ID
Looks like B fargesii sort of but is it fuzzy? I think you are right that Phy is out, S tootsik is cold tolerant to the maybe -5c range? Could be a large form of Pleioblastus, a Semiarundinaria, a Pseudosasa form or a Bashania?

Re: Unknown Bamboo ID
I'm realizing that I'm starting to forget my running bamboo days, as I recall Phy aurita has a fuzzy ring at the nodes but that is not a common bamboo. I might check photos later as I feel like there is another I had, I believe that S tootsik also does but even more uncommon. Do the Bashania have a ...

My observation here is that they seem to really like some bamboo and others might show little to no signs.

Re: Identity please? Not much to go on
Yeah, not enough to go on, it is for sure a spreading type of bamboo and if you can find out what the most common type of running bamboo in your area is, that would be a starting point. I can almost see some coloration on the shoot sheath so that is close to a clue but this shoot is too juvenile to ...

Looks great! You might have a real winner there! I'm learning to live with the mites here, I don't think that I could stop them if I tried!

Re: Fungus or Pest Residue?
Mine out here also curls it's leaves everyday when in direct sun and then unrolls when not so I don't think in my case it is an issue but I rarely see 85F so yours must surely be more extreme. Sounds like it needs shade there or as you suggest, the bay area climate.

Re: Clumping Bamboo Footprint?
I find Chungii to be a very open clumper that tends to eat up space and will continue to expand the clump, my plan is to take divisions off to keep it where I want. The kanapaha for me was less open, but one day you'll have the same issue with it.

A worthy experiment! I bet the cows will want to snack on it so the cages will surely be required! I've read multiple times that bamboo planted in berms like that tends to do very well. Good luck!
