Re: fargesia nitida planting information
One more question:
How cold is too cold to plant nitida? Should you wait until the threat of frost is over or until you can dig the soil and its warmed up a bit?

Re: Pulling dandelions, and using them as fertilizer
I generally do the same steve. Tap root plants tend to break up hard soil, dig way down and pump nutrients from pretty far down where they arent usually accessible. Comfrey is an amazing plant in that respect and they pump 6 or more minerals from the sub soil, grow rapidly and have many uses like co...

Re: fargesia nitida planting information
john - I know there have been countless discussions on how bamboo hardiness ratings are found. Putting that discussion aside, The leaves and culm tips on the rufa seem to take about -17C as you say, but the buds seem to take a bit more. The bottom bit and the roots can take quite a bit more. My rufa...

Re: fargesia nitida planting information
Thanks John, that makes it easier to place. I would like to try it unprotected one winter. Ill see how tarping it works and let it mature a bit before that.. wufang - With the amount of plants I have in my yard and being a mile away from lake superior, I wont have to worry about humidity. When you l...

Re: fargesia nitida planting information
Well, we get sun a lot longer then you do down there steve. It isnt completely dark untill 11 PM in the summer. It may not be as intense as down south, but the length of exposure is almost 2-4 hours longer then almost anyone south of me, even Toronto and near Erie.

Re: fargesia nitida planting information
John - I am not sure if I want to leave it exposed for the winter. I know its tough but the spots that will be warmest in the winter are all sunny with the exception of one spot. It gets shaded from noveber to about this time of year. Its the best micro climate I have so im selective about what to p...

Re: Goldfish population explosion
Koi will grow to three or four feet. You can get the growth rate up with good food but the best thing is the size and depth of the pond. They can take some good cold but they need unfrozen water and a bit of muck. The water should be a mi imum of five feet if not you have to builild a frame and mulc...

Re: Goldfish population explosion
Is that the big pond allan? The bigger it is the better chance you can get away with no filtration. My grandma had a modest sized pond a good 15 years ago, maybe 500 gallons and every year she could not stop her fish from breeding. She lost all her fish a few years after that and restocked. That yea...

Re: How I trick squirrels into leaving my bambo shoots alone
Makel Didnt mean it to sound like I was being all "think of the children" about what you eat. To each.his own. Personally I leave them alone and eating them isnt the norm here. I was talking about the dead squirrel pic. There are quite a few people in my experience that would try to make a...

Re: How I trick squirrels into leaving my bambo shoots alone
the thing with squirrels is that we can sit there and shoot them all day everyday and we wont even make a dent in the population. I see it as waisted energy and waisted ammo. I bet if you added up the time spent dealing with them and the cost of ammo traps and poison you could replace the damaged pl...

Re: Venus Fly Trap Info
I keep mine in a cup full of water. Ive had three of them, and without doing this they die quick. I keep mine in a plastic tube for humidity. one thing I did notice that you may want to know is that they seem to go dormant. Mine die back twice a year and seem to rest for a month or two them surprise...

Re: Phyllostachys heteroclada from seed
Personally if i were to trust any seed ID it would be from RPS. Especially if they put something like this on their site: "Species purity: All seeds are species pure, correctly identified and only come from cultivated plants if we are 100% sure that they are species pure (not hybridised). "...
