Iowa, we need to get you away from the ferrets, ducks, and cardinals for a trip to the nearest natural food store or asian grocery (yes, I'm certain that they are out there - you may have to go all the way to New Pioneer Co-op who has stores in Iowa City & Coralville). You can stockplie cans of ...

Markj, a few months back I had a phone conversation with PW and a subsequent brief email dialogue as I was considering visiting him instead of Jos. I had an eye on PW's Aureosulcata 'Argus' and wanted to see if he had any of the other majors on my list (he didn't, thankfully). I had just ruled out M...

Steve, if you do end up in Wash DC, be sure to add 6 months to your August target as that would not be a good strategy there. And the rootball for a 3' wide, deeply dug division makes my back sore just thinking about it! Mine and also the backs of about 5 other people!

Don't do it for the sake of the Japonica, it is known to take long strecthes underwater without ill effect. I suspect that you have other reasons for doing it but if it is just for the bamboo you could instead frame around it right on top of the ground in a raised bed style box, fill that in and let...

Iowa, around here I believe that the rhizomes begin to grow at the end of the major shooting period for the species, on average for me that is mid to late June, and they continue to run until late October to early November - peaking in August-September. I believe that it is soil temps that fuel the ...

Kurt, I'm all about bamboo experiements so keep up posted with your Japonica. What will you do if the submerged ones end up being larger? That would require further experiements for sure. Unless you again severed the rhizomes the transplanted one may not down size from the relocation.

Ah yes, thanks for the tip, 'Browse with Pictures' is not very intuitive to me. Maybe changing the text to recent postings or something similar would be clearer?

Steve, I seem to recall you stating a preference for plants that have been container grown for at least a year and the Turtles inventory will be the opposite in that they are freshly dug divisions. I know there are 2 schools of thought on field division versus container grown and which is preferable...

If you'll allow me to disregard the crookstem aspect, everything else, including the culm leaves, says Bissetii to me. The shoots look right, the size is well within established ranges, the lack of winter damage, the culm coloration and the close spacing of the culms all say Bissetii. On mature Hete...

Bill, I seem to recall that the original boopeople used to show a list of the 6 or so most recently posted photos. What about adding this feature here so that maybe the last 10 or so are on a list, in addition to the 3 that are displayed? This way we could still catch new pics (more than the 3) when...

Adam has the specific list and he is away for a few days so I do not know if the Shanghai 3 or any other particular species have started shooting yet but I did just learn that 24 of the 49 pieces of rhizome I brought back have shoots, a few are already starting to produce leaves. There was a total o...

David, FYI Adam & Sue Turtle of Our Bamboo Nursery are located in Summertown and I suspect that you are close enough to think about a drive if you are seeking more bamboo. They sell mainly balled & burlap field divisions, specializing in digging custom sizes to order. In general you can expe...

Well it may not be spring yet but among other chores today, I dug 7 Nigra and 3 Robert Young divisions. Not much digging, really it was just therapeutic but this is the first time I've been able to dig in January and I had never before been able to dig these 2 species with prior year culms as they h...

I just use a scythe on the smaller patches but once they're 3-4 years established its time to fire up the lawnmower. It probably did sound strange echoing through the woods.

Iowa, why aren't you going to cut yours back?
