Re: Bamboo fever!

I admit it, with chagrin: I get cranky if anyone stops me to chat early in the morning, and thereby causes my hot chocolate to cool before I can go watch the bamboo raining on itself. It is ritual, and I'm not very graceful about derailments. I hop from foot to foot, and look over my shoulder, wait...

Re: Winter of 2010-11 Fried Bamboo List " Hold the cheese pl

Go ahead Brad. I've got more to report also. Fried leaves can uncurl and look OK only to turn blonde and fall off in the spring. I don't want to discourage our AL and SC friends but if it looked burned during the cold spell it probably is. Thanks for the explantions! You guys are exactly right--it ...

Re: Tis the season to notice bamboo groves you never saw bef

I actually saw 2 previously unknown to me groves in Easley, SC last week but didn't have time that day to stop for a close look but hope to soon. I am hoping that at least one of them is one of those seemingly mythical groves of Phyllostachys aurea. It is strange to me that so many websites state t...

Re: Winter of 2010-11 Fried Bamboo List " Hold the cheese pl

Of my 30 or so species in ground, it's of course no surprise that my first year Chimonobambusa quadrangularis is already about fried Ok, so maybe I don't know exactly what fried bamboos look like. That Chiminobambusa looks fine today :o , even though the leaves looked totally dessicated and as thou...

Matthew -- the 'Spectabilis' is looking "beat" or "best"? (Unfortunate typo I think) Also, you need to update your plants list in your profile. :) lol yes, a most unfortunate typo, both in the meaning it conveys and in that the verb usage in that case would be atrocious :) The l...

Bamboo fever!

Since most of us here have this terrible syndrome (terribly WONDERFUL, that is!) and it is a little bit slower time of the year for forums such as this, I thought maybe it was a good time for some therapy :) Of course, the first step in treating anything (and by treating in this case, I mean feeding...

Re: Winter of 2010-11 Fried Bamboo List " Hold the cheese pl

It has already gotten down to 18 degrees here with high, dry winds, extremely cold and windy for December in this area, in fact record breaking cold! Of my 30 or so species in ground, it's of course no surprise that my first year Chimonobambusa quadrangularis is already about fried. That obvious one...

Re: Chimonobambusa hardiness

Thanks for the reply! I guess my only hope is to mulch it very well and protect the foliage from the wind as well as I can this winter and hop for the best. On the bright side, it is my understanding that this winter is to be very mild in my area, so maybe that will help it be able to size up and de...

Chimonobambusa hardiness

Hi, all! I am wondering what your experiences are with Chimonobambusa in regards to cold hardiness. I have a C. quadrangularis 'suow' and it seems that various sources list its hardiness (as well as that of other members of the genus) to be either 10 or 15 degrees, so my guess would be that it would...

Re: new to the forum

Matthew -- I strongly recommend taking a lot of photos of your yard right now, including overlapping shots that you can stitch together into large panoramic images. Then in a couple of years you can look back at those photos and marvel at how boring your yard was. :) I have some photos of the "...

Re: new to the forum

Welcome! Look at it this way- the more bamboo you grow, the less time you spend mowing! Exactly my point! I love gardening but hate mowing the lawn! And I really believe that even with root pruning and gathering shoots for food, I will still makeup time that can be spent just browsing the gr...

Re: new to the forum

Thanks, David, I plan on feeding it from now on! I was really amazed when I counted the varieties, but early in the summer I decided to just go for broke and get the yard mostly ready to grow into the vision I have of it for the future. I have always wanted to actually live inside a garden and it is...

new to the forum

Hi, fellow garden lovers, just wanted to introduce myself. Since childhood I have loved gardening but only recently became interested in bamboo. I have been lurking here since last spring and appreciate this group’s knowledge and insight into bamboo. It is only by what I have read here and a couple ...
