Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

For Shanghai 3 there were a lot of culms I had to break in order to tarp, but they stayed green through the winter enough to transfer their energy to the massive new culms this year. It is sometimes tough to break them low enough to cover them well, but as long as theres attachment, the top parts us...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

I got 5 shoots on the bicolor, the 2 on the far left very small. Since it still got damaged despite tarping, the culms aren't very big, but should still have nearly as much foliage as it would if it didn't get burnt since the 3 tall ones are still at least 6ft tall. https://scontent.fhnl1-1.fna.fbcd...

Re: Michigan bamboo mistake? phyllostachys parvifolia

2.5 inches is pretty impressive, but given warm enough winter's or protection, it's probably the fastest upsizing bamboo that sometimes doesn't spread far or make too many culms in the first few years. Parvifolia is more cold hardy still doesn't spread that quickly, but does make more culms and even...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

In my experience, tarping will work to at least ensure that the culms aren't killed, but a lot of times, if there is no snow cover, and wind blows on the tarp, the leaves close enough to the tarp will still burn, and having them damp for too long can also cause the foliage to rot, but with bicolor I...

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018

Moso bicolor puts out it's first shoot, about the same size as the biggest from last year. It got pretty bad leaf burn even with double tarping since it was just a bad winter, but the branches are leafing back out, and based on my experience, there is probably going to be more shoots to follow even ...

Re: Indoor Moso

Sounds like that is exactly your problem. Those regular 28watt flourescent coil bulbs do not have the full spectrum required for moso seedlings to have proper photosynthesis. Do you have any windowsills? Its best to have south facing ones, but east and north facing would still work better than a cfl...

Re: Temperate bamboo growing in a tropical climate

Aside from that one runner, I haven't seen any other bamboos aside from clumpers likely in the bambusa family. There are lots of the yellow type with green stripes that gets to around 2.5-3 inches in diameter. It only appears that bamboo is sold off the big island, but I haven't seen any of the comm...

Temperate bamboo growing in a tropical climate

One question that has always bothered me is if a temperate bamboo can actually grow and thrive in a tropical climate where it never experiences a dormancy period, and I believe I have found my answer. Here are a couple of pictures showing perhaps ph bissettii growing in Hawaii where it hardly every ...

Looks like you have a tiny plant that will only get a bit larger next season, and at that size it would still keep getting bigger with complete top kill. You may be able to get away with opening a few white trash bags, and then covering it up with a couple of logs to top it off, save some leaf bags ...

Re: Looks like its gonna be a bad winter for some of us.

With multiple nights in the single digits and below consecutively, this year looks like no joke so in addition to double tarping my bicolor, i added r-19 roofing insulation over the whole thing, then on top of that loaded a foot of extra snow especially for this coming week. Christmas lights would p...

Re: Should I start over?

After growing bamboos for nearly a decade in upstate NY, the only species that seemed to never top kill and at least leaf back on tough winters has been parvifolia anf atrovaginata. If they at least have the ability tl leaf back out, at least they wont really lose size. For drought tolerance, parvif...

Re: Michigan bamboo mistake? phyllostachys parvifolia

When u tarp it over, don't use transparent tarp since it could cause overheating. I've found that a nice thick sheet of white overwintering agricultural cover has worked the best. If you want to ensure temperatures are not a problem, you could buy some cheap portable weather station that comes with ...

Re: Question about selling bamboo seedlings

If you are getting a bunch of divisions now, it may be wise to wrap up the pots, then lay them on their sides to be tarped over because the 2nd half of this winter is expected to be pretty brutal, unless you simply put them into a greenhouse, or the main moso grove that you normally heat up. Once th...

Re: Michigan bamboo mistake? phyllostachys parvifolia

I would count that as a blessing because it means that your bamboo is starting to grow new roots, and it is definitely viable. It may not harden off all the way. It is clearly sending new roots to fill out your pot. If you are that worried about them, you could stick them in a greenhouse, or cold fr...
