Re: Should I buy it?
The worst case of course is it dying, but I would expect that it would live but maybe have lower vigor and produce wimpy shoots at first which might translate into an extra year of growth needed to be the size that a more costly one would become in less time? Hope that makes sense? I am WAY more exp...

Re: Should I buy it?
If only they would have left the first branch on some of those culms...if it was a bargain, I'd buy it but not if the price approaches that of a potted one with foliage. It probably will be fine but the seller discounted the product a little I think. Looks more like TImor than Java.

Re: How to train Bambusa oldhamii?
Hi Trixie, the watering/feeding in the direction you want it to go is a solid plan, you might also consider putting down some of the heavier concrete pavers along the side that you do not want the spread, that might help, I think somewhere on this site is a post from Roy Rogers regarding the use of ...

Re: ID Help & Suggestions
I only had mine for about 2 years and it was in the 12-14' range then, it would get to 20' unless severe cold whacks it back, but I can not say how long it would take. Bambusa textilis - a green bamboo, would get to 20' faster, is more cold tolerant, and it an outstanding vertical screener - superio...

Re: ID Help & Suggestions
Greetings, your 2' of width in the planter is a little narrow but might work OK, the clumps will fill that space pretty quickly so you might need to sawzall/remove some rhizome/rootball to maintain it. I don't know which yellow bamboo you saw but in CA in a similar winter zone to you I grew this one...

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?
Looks good! I was mainly thinking about removing all of the rhizome mass with equip so it would be easier to restart something in that area-rejuv the soil etc..

I must really be getting old, I'm thinking that if I were you I'd consider hiring someone with a backhoe or trencher if the area could be accessed.

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?
Did you get seedlings sprouting up from it? Just guessing but I'd expect it to not recover or at least I would not wait for it to do so much longer and although a daunting task, I'd try to remove the mass and replant something new. Maybe wait as long as you can but have a plan B ready.

I think once it was unreal how many there were but that grove then always seemed to have lots of them after that.

Re: Graceful Bamboo Flowering
Greetings, often bamboo will die after flowering, not always as some species can flower and hang in there but I would be prepared for it.

I had the same thing once in Indiana, I used to walk past them at dusk after they roosted just to hear the cacophony when I walked past.

Re: containing running bamboo
Greetings, I believe that the bamboo would find its way out pretty easily, you'd need to make drainage holes and right there is an escape path plus it would likely be able to pierce the sides over time.

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
Not sure how solid this is but it almost seemed to me like burned plants that end up leafing back out are slow to shoot as the leaves take forever to flush and then shoot late and don't shoot much, whereas top kills shoot lots and fast albeit smaller has anyone else seen this?
