Roy is that a complete list of your bamboo? How are the Tootsik & Nigra getting along? Tootsik in Honolulu gets huge but any other Phyllostachys I see is stunted. Does your Malay dwarf look good or is it like the ones I see - kind of ratty looking? Every variegated leaf bamboo I have seen in Haw...

Time to mow?

I generally mow my Pleioblastus groundcover species in mid to late February to get rid of the 'ugly' foliage before the new spring growth comes up. Late enough that I can enjoy them like an ornamental grass in it's winter form but not so late that I chop off the new seasons shoots. I've been away at...

Kurt, I remember telling you to be prepared for small culms after transplanting due to rhizome vigor realities so I think it will be another 2 seasons before you can say for certain whether or not the water is an issue. My rule of thumb for newly planted field divisions in cold climates and the appa...

Roy, what catches my eye about the B. chungii "barbelatta" in the photo is the lack of lower branching and how the foliage is clustered at the top of the culms. Is this because the plant in the photo is a juvenille, is it the natural form of the species or perhaps it has been pruned? Any g...

Markj - where do reside - I forget what part of the UK - and how large is your lot? In some ways the clumping nature of the Phy's there is a nice feature in that you can really layer/texture the garden by combining them with other bamboos/plant groups. I really liked how Jos has such a diverse garde...

tropical species

Roy & all tropical bambuseros , do you have this species and is this a representative photo? <img src= "http://www.bambooweb.info/ShowPictures2.php?BooID=17&Desc=&Loc=&Match=AND&s=1"> http://www.bambooweb.info/ShowPictures2.php?BooID=17&Desc=&Loc=&Match=AND&...

Don't y'all got any hills 'round there Bill? Looks mighty flat to us hill folks shock: I bet you get some straight line winds there that are not too bamboo friendly. I had 1 and only 1 spot flat enough to even think about for the greenhouse and I'm still trying to figure out where to put in a basket...

Markj - I would appreciate seeing 'landscape' views of your garden to see how you've integrated all of your bamboo into the overall landscape. I fancy watching the City Gardener on HGTV I think and it is really a good example of how to use the montane species in the landscape. I really like the host...

What picture?

No that did it, nice blue blush on the culms. My Gramineus Monstrispiralis blues up very nicely. I have a pic of it on my homepage at

http://www.needmorebamboo.com/

Phy Makinoi, Heteroclada Solidstem, Glauca for the cold growers can also do the blue.

Adam Turtle in SC Tenn has a mature Atrovaginata grove on an island in one of his ponds. It does look quite cool with the 2 inch by 30 feet culms filling up the island.

Markj - nothing I've tried thus far allows me to see the photos you post. Now, one I posted recently does not show up either. Not sure what to do but the suggestions from others haven't worked for me yet. Not being able to see your pictures and not being able to grow your montane species keeps me fr...

EB - If I were you I'd probably do the feeding the first week of February and hit everything. I'll be about 2-3 weeks behind you with feeding.

Rarely will a shoot survive a hard frost and very, very rarely a freeze.

"I'm assuming, by the timing of your question (Winter), that you are looking to fertilize, not for increased cold hardiness of your above ground vegatation of culms and leaves" Roy, this is a topic that I think needs clarification and I'm not the one with the answers, only the questions! I...

Eric, I liberally apply granular 13-13-13 about a month before I anticipate shoots popping up - for me that is generally late Feb - I'm not quite sure when that would be for you. Then, 1 more application at the end of shooting season which for me is late June. Everything gets horse manure/sawdust mi...

I think I must have created confusion about my UFO ground cover. There is nothing special about its hardiness and in fact it gets burned pretty easily as it now is already mostly tanned out. It is however, extremely aggressive and spreads like wildfire, so for me it makes an excellent fill-in plant ...
