RE: Unknown plant

Thanks for the ID and all the great info. It's good to finally know what it is. When times get rough enough I'll give the recipes a try, but I'll leave out the pork brains until the depression is truly upon us.

The plant itself is attractive, looking somewhat tropical in appearance.

RE: Northern Bamboo and Winter

I think the cold is good for the temperate bamboos at this point. I'd just watch for sudden cold snaps and lower 20's then start thinking about getting them protection.

RE: putting plants inside.

Only a guess, but it seems like no light would be ok as long as the temps were low enough to keep the plants dormant. If the plants are not dormant, then I don't know how long they'd survive. I tried overwintering Bambusa textilis (tropical) in my unheated garage. There are no windows & no light...

RE: Northern Bamboo and Winter

I've kept Phyllostachys in my garage over winter successfully. I did try to keep the temps above freezing most of the time but it fell into the 20's a few times. You still need to water once a month or so, careful not to overdo it. Your barn sounds too cold for potted Phyllostachys once it gets belo...

RE: How to capture the waxy coating on Ph. glauca?

It does seem to be difficult to capture some of the subtle nuances of bamboo on film (or on sensor I guess I should say). I agree with David, if you can get a closer shot, that would probably help. (Anyway, close-ups are about the only way for me to photograph since my plants remain so small.) Anoth...

Re: RE: i love my pond

hey mike what do you do with your koi in the winter? how deep is ur pond? its rather cool The pond is only 18" deep but I kept an aerator running all winter. I think this kept enough oxygen and liquid water for the koi. We also had a ton of snow all winter which kept the pond well insulated fr...

RE: i love my pond

Great pix! Ya, I'm right with you on pond enjoyment. There's something about ponds that is very relaxing and wonderful. I have a few koi that are lots of fun. They seem to be full of "personality." http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Thuja/pond/koiEating43.jpg The plants and foliage rea...

Neat pix. Thanks for a virtual visit to China. I bet the bamboo there made you feel at home away from home.

Wow, that's a mess. The uprooted strictus is amazing. I assume your house must be OK since you didn't mention it. I know bamboo is important but glad y'awl survived the storm. Must have been a scary event.

Shadow tag is fun but dangerous. Maybe we'll shoot a bamboo fight scene a la Crouching Tiger Hidden Kiddy.

That's it! I knew there was some mysterious reason for why I like looking at bamboo shadows. Normally I don't even notice any of the universe's dark matter.

RE: How do you mark your plants?

Amazingly I can remember all the names. When I die tho people are going to wonder what's what. I can even remember where the dead plants were and what their names were. As for peoples' names, I have more trouble remembering. Maybe I need to try labeling people with my 2' PVC plant stakes.
