Strawberry Palm

Post by boonut »

Someone gave me this palm and called it a Strawberry Palm. Very nice palm and goes well with bamboo with yellow culms. Anyone know the botanical name of this one?

Wish I could get 30 more of these. I have had it for about 3 years now.

The leaf is completely different. Let me ask someone who is an expert.

Those red petioles are stunning!

After looking at a number of other sites with pictures of Latania lontaroides, I believe that is it. Thanks Roy.

Bepah, if you find something different, please let me know. Looks like this one is endangered or almost extinct in its natural habitat. But, I did find a number of sites that had the palm.

Thanks a bunch.

On second thought and after referring to a better source than me, it is a Latania lontaroides ..

You are lucky to have it.

It needs warmth and humidity.....winters must be hell for it.

Well now, who is this "expert" and "a better source than me (meaning "you")"?

Boonut was the one who had it for 3 years, but I'll have to give him credit for the fact that he's had his head up a bamboo culm for the last 3 or more years. Plus he's providing a safe haven for bamboo in deeep south Texas where no bamboo has run or clumped before.

I joined the Palm Society of South Texas a few years ago... they liked my bamboo and I liked most of the palms. Some of the very generous members gave me palms and I gave them bamboo.

Reminded me of when I first started learning about bamboo. I was at Steve Carter's place. I had to carry around a Compaq IPAQ and ask people to "say that name again... into the microphone". The names were really tough to remember.

I didn't pay that much attention to the palms. I think I have some rare ones. I only went to about 3 meetings and decided I like bamboo more. I have to say that the Strawberry Palm is my favorite so far.

Never heard of "strawberry palm" before but your palm looks like a blue latin (Latania loddigesii) to me. They are both red when young but the red is redder.

If your palm shows the red on the leaf like this red one does I can be wrong but I could not see it.

We haven't had any freezes since I got it, so it really looks nice. I definitely agree with the Latania Lontaroides ID. I haven't seen another one in the ground down here, but I do know where to get more. I just need to take a few boos over and trade.
