In which corner of the Earth do you live, Canadianplant?
Toronto's been enjoying 23-24 degree weather for the past few days and will be 20-ish for the coming weeks as well.

Still not seeing any shoot though.

Canadianplant, it would be kind of funny if you still have snow sticking to the ground into June when it is summer everywhere else. I guess the bright side is that you might not have to worry about a late killing frost when spring finally shows up for you in June.

We are hanging around the 24C/10C mark which are not quite summer temperatures yet, but are warm enough to cause all my bamboos to shoot if it stays this warm long enough.

Here's some more excitement. The cool part is that the bamboos still haven't started yet, and there is already so much stuff to admire in the gardens.

Everything except for the last 2 pictures showing the explosive growth would have to be from seed. When apple tree roots get close enough to the surface, they can sometimes send up little trees close to the original trunk. It doesn't happen nearly as much as you would expect from a cherry tree or locust tree, but apple trees are known to produce new trees from the roots.

I ended up potting up most of these just for fun. I think these seedlings must be from the squirrels eating the apples while they are in the tree and dropping the cores down so viable seeds keep germinating below, close to the tree.

Ah ok steve... I planted a few macintosh seeds a few years ago and planted one of the seedlings. It grew 3 feet last year and am surprised by the cold hardiness. I got a few green plum seedlings as well. Apparently green plums usually grow quite close to the parent tree...

Nice pics out west as well!!

Here's some signs of Spring:

Regular Red Peony
Image

I give this guy the award for Winter hardiness. As you can see, the bulb was tossed here for dead and it manages to survive Winter and blooms beautifully!
Image

Grape Vine - budding. I discovered something cool the day - I cut a grape vine off and it was dripping pure water for 2 days!
Image

Honey Suckle - If you think bamboo is invasive, this guy sends out hundreds of branches and roots wherever it touches. The roots and vine are also extremely tough that you can probably use it to pull a dump truck with only a few strands.
Image

This looks like a Pear seedling. Not sure what kind it is. I am hoping it's the Fragrant Pear. Can someone ID?
Image

Green (Walking) Onion - ready for harvest
Image

White Bleeding Heart - about to bloom
Image

Lady Fern
Image

Windmill Palm - looking a bit roughened up over the Winter. I might have exposed it too soon.
Image

Army of Mints ready to take over...

Poke - Not a pear seedling. Pear leaves have less veins, and have sharper ridges on the leaves. Also the trunks are darker. The leaves look like cherry of some sort to me, could possibly be plum.

Really nice yard with a good variety. My honeysuckle leafed out already, even in shade. Im surprised how tough they are.
