An "Everything" garden

Post by canadianplant »

Here is my young garden with a bit of everything from bamboo to fruit trees to herbs and tomatoes.

Still in clean up mode lol

An oddly shaped Bosc seedling pear

The back. That echinacia is 6feet plus tall. If you look at the center back you can see my Phylloscachys alata

My alata at 6 feet tall

The microclimate. That is my Basjoo in the ground getting ready for its first winter. Wish me luck.

My fargesia rufa. It amazes me every year. Im going to finally fertilize the soil properly in the spring and summer to really get it going. I do nothing to it besides winter protection (same with all my bamboo)

looks great!. You should look into harvesting rain water. That will save you a view bucks on your water bill. search youtube for ideas.

I have roughly 300 gallons in barrels as a back up. The best thing though? I never really have to water. We get reliable rain and I have enough mulch and ground cover to make sure watering is kept at a minimal, except in early spring when I have newly planted stuff. That just depends on how much rain we get in the spring. I definitely dont water anything in september either. I need everything to harden off.

You really should fertilize the bamboos. They'll appreciate it (unless your soil is unusually fertile already).

Well as far as I know my soil is fertile enough generally speaking. I know bamboo is a heavy feeder but I havent had any problems except some yellowing early in the season on the alata. The rufa has alway sbeen that nice green. I do understand what you are saying. That little push with some manure early in the spring and mid summer may give me some surprising results.
