Anyone tried Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Kawadana'

Post by Steve in France »

I'm thinking of trying a couple of bambusoides here in MD as it is possible they would do well. Two things really experiences with bambusoides and if anyone has a 'Kawadana' and/or Allgold going spare.
All my trade plants are to go to members at the moment even the not dug parvifolia have homes. I'll divide vivax H Inversa in a week or so and should have few spares of that. I could dig a couple of Sasa kurilensis 'Shimofiuri' as I have bunch.

I paid good money for a Kawadana from BG and it arrived seriously wounded, most of the leaves dead and cane damage all from too long and too hot of a trip here. It never really recovered from that and eventually died. I have either an Allgold or Castillonis, Allgold I think. It's your Steve if you want it, top killed last winter and has a couple of new short culms, may not be ready to dig just yet. Let me know if you want it.

Brad happy to give The Allgold a home if your sure it needs a new home.
Here are a few pics , the Lily is called Almost Black , and you would be doing me a favor to take it as I have not built my pond yet and need pot space for the ones you sent.
Plus the pots in the pic, the pot in front has the prominens I want to take down to David for you to get at some point.
There is also a pic of the Timber Bamboo you gave me , all new growth , all old growth cut out.

Sasa kurilensis 'Shimofiuri' fillin out well in second season
A pic of parvi , most of the old growth cut out after new culms reached full growth. This seems to have made slanted culms more upright, keep the old culms in place that is. Plus my Bamboo helper ,Beau our 5 month old Chessie pup as 50 lbs

Looks great Steve, I'll keep an eye on the Allgold - I'll confirm that it is not the Castillonis first - and dig when ready it has no future here.

How did you get pics of my dog when he was a puppy? Looks just like ours did, he is 8 now so time for a pup here as well, I'm quite partial to Chessies they are the cats of the dog world.

Steve, have you grown Bambusoides cultivars in marginal climate before? Just wondering if you know that juvenile divisions are not very leaf hardy at all. My Allgold and Castillon both got about 90% leaf burn at 18f their first winter, while the aurea cultivars in the same conditions didn't even seem to notice the cold at all. No doubt they will gain hardiness for me as the years go on, but I wonder how long they will take to get there. They have largely leafed back out but I think some of the leaf buds must've gotten fried, as they both still look pretty ragged.
God Bless,

Brad I'll sort out the Lilies, they can go in a small box, they are very green I think this was all the leaves that rotted in the water. Markj has my Water Lily collection in is dirt bottom Pond and they are doing great he says.
Beau is more like a Horse at the moment , Lord knows how big he will get.

Matthew, I grew All Gold in France and it did very well, took down to 10 f no problem . This was an old plant when I got it. It was one Paul Spracklin had been growing for 12 years and he wanted more space so we dug it up. We are a little coastal here about 10 minutes drive from DC . In a normal Winter ( if there is such a thing anymore ) it's not sustained cold.
Bambusoides is an experiment here , All Gold has such great colour , that orange yellow. I think once they get some age and size bambusoides could be a top Bamboo here.

If you provide a sheltered location with full sun Allgold and Castillon should do well for you. I purchased a 1 gal. Allgold 2 yrs. ago, up potted to a 5 gal. when I got it and over wintered by burying pot in ground in a sheltered south facing area, covered with plastic during coldest spells and it suffered no leaf loss. Planted in ground last Spring and it grew to 6-8 four ft. culms. This Spring it put up 2 eight ft. culms about the diameter of my thumb that have about leafed out. I'm hoping with regular fertilizing and watering I can get it to shoot again and maybe run a little from which I can take divisions. I grow a few gold culm boo's, Golden Crookstem, Golden Golden, Robert Young, Vivax Aureocaulis but Allgold can't be beat and is definitely worth the effort of any protection you made need to provide. I just acquired Castillon this Spring but with the same approach I expect the same results, time will tell.

I think Allgold will definately be a top bamboo here too eventually, but I took the much lazier approach of just planting mine in the ground so mine will perhaps tale a little longer :)

So far vivax aureocaulis has the best color for me to my eye but my opinion could change once I get some large culms on the Allgold. It certainly looks great in the pics I've seen! To me, the highly variegated leaves set Allgold apart among golden culmed boos as well.
God Bless,

Matthew

Like Castillon, I just acquired Vivax Aureocaulis this year and can't yet compare until it puts on some size. My Vivax is more yellow/tan than the orange gold of Allgold.

Allgold doubling in height from 4' to 8' in its third season.

Finding 'Kawadana' seems a little harder, I guess I should phone around. Lewis Bamboo is about 3 hours South of me here . Guess I should make a trip . I should get vivax aureocaulis here too , I have two different clones of vivax aureocaulis growing in France. One of my clones is the normal one, maybe from Mark maybe from Jos , cannot remember. The other is a clone from Andrew in Holland that never gets bigger that 2 inch thick and only produces culms every 3 or 4 foot of rhizome. So it really runs and spreads.
Very annoying to have Bamboos and not to be able have my own clones here , oh well :(

Is Lewis really only 3 hours from you? They are more like 9 due south of me. Have you checked the Silvermans in Crewe VA? Mid-Atlantic Bamboo, they may have it. If you get it from Noah, I'd have it shipped the fastest way, it would be worth the extra $$!
