Re: Is everyone’s Phyllostachys Nigra Flowering?
I started this post in 2019, just after I’d bought some black bamboo that I’d been wanting to get for years, only to discover a nearby grove of it was in flower. Since then in most places around the world it’s also flowered. My own was slow to flower. 5 years after I saw the first one flowering, mine finally did……just as it was looking really good. It’s a very slow process because it’s been flowering now for 18 months! Most has died off but I’ve got some shoots coming up. I don’t think they’re seedlings. They look like they’re growing from existing rhizomes. Some new shoots also have flowers/seeds on them, but others do not. Is there any hope that some will survive?

I have 3 other pots of it. All have some new shoots.

In the past when I’ve had other species of Phyllostachys flower the new shoots come up start to leaf out and then start to flower. Don’t know if yours will as well, but that’s what mine did. Those weren’t Nigra but you know maybe the same?

Yes, some of the new shoots are also flowering but others don’t seem to be. You don’t say if the new flowering shoots died off, but I’m assuming they did. Did any of it survive?

I am actually hoping my nigra will flower and die. Nigra is so not cold hardy for my area. I am tired of having to protect it every year. Last year it shot up to 15 feet or more. This year, it downsized significantly due to top kill.

Mine flowed last year and mostly died over the winter with shoots only on new rhizomes far from groves center. This also happened to pretty much every none ground cover bamboo I have except S3. I have not been on in a very long time but will be back posting. I’ll make a list. I pretty much lost my tropical oasis completely. Dead leaves and culms everywhere. Yellow groove, paravifolia, spectibillis, Nigra, Bisettii, inversa, those are some off the top of my head many more.
