Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta flowering
I purchased this tecta about 3 years ago, planted it in a moist area (someone has already said that wouldn't be the best thing to do), it hasn't spread (1.5 ft) much but has gotten tall and bushy. It looks like its going to flower this Spring as the flowering buds are evident on most of the canes. They are a deep red color.
1. Anyone else observe this?
2. I've read that tecta doesn't die after flowering, anybody want to confirm?
Also, I'll post some photos this weekend.

with some running species of bamboo, if you take drastic measures, you may be able to save some of the plant. Im am not sure on Tecta specificly, but saving the plant is not a sure thing.
sometimes bamboos will flower due to stress, if you search the forums you will find posts from folks who have this happening on a plant here and there, or even on just part of a plant. it could be possible that yours is flowering due to the stress of the area its planted in.

Re: RE: Arundinaria gigantea ssp. tecta flowering
Are you saying you think it's Fargesia nitida and not Arundinaria?ghmerrill wrote:well, thats the most Fargesia nitida looking Arundinaria I have ever seen.....
Didn't you say that your nitida has started flowering this year? If so, can you post pics for comparison?

yup... looks like nitida to me! flowers look similar at a glance, however, I need to either take a few minutes and look them up in the photos here, or to go outside and look at mine.

I just received an email from Dr. Jimmy Triplett and he says the photos look like a Fargesia, probably F. nitida.

Thanks for the responses. Yes I looked at pictures of Fargesia nitida and it is remarkably identical. My only problem is that I purchased the plant myself as a 3 gallon from a known & established grower in the Deep South, (not Ebay). Looking at their website they don't even sell Fargesia.
However if the consensus is Fargesia nitida, I can always email the grower and see if it is possible.

I think that it is more than possible....
even the most expirenced growers can get things mixed up, or get plants in from other places who get them mixed up...
