Ebay Bissetii

Post by bambootony »

Just a note to let everyone know that this seller is selling Yellow Grove as Bissetii.
I purchased some from the VERY NICE seller.
http://cgi.ebay.com/2-bissetti-bamboo-p ... 286.c0.m14
They dug BIG 15+foot clums but I doubt they will survive as they have roots but no rhizome to go with them.
1 of the clums is severly stressed with rolled leaves.
The price was right though 10.00 for a 15 foot plant. "IF THEY SURVIVE"
I would have prefered to have dug my own???
I was amazed at 1 clum they had planted near there barn it was 3+ inches!!!
Not too bad for zone 6.
It was planted reciently and was only about 14" round dig again no rhizome to support the plant..
Comments welcome to help my yellow grove survive.

without seeing any pics I can only offer some general suggestions

Without any rhizomes the culms will drop leaves and then go blond and die. Keep them in partial shade and water them well, they may just surpise you and survive. Yellow groove is extremely common and if these plants do not survive, another source can easily be found.

In my experience, sellers of bamboo on eBay are generally pretty ignorant of bamboo and of how to make divisions that will survive. They misidentify what they have, and often send chunks of rhizome that won't survive or will take years to develop into a decent plant. I'm not optimistic that you are going to have success with what the "very nice seller" sent you. If you want to get some decent bamboo on a budget, you should post again to see what folks on this forum are willing to send you for postage, and you should also check the Exchange forum here where there are some similar listings. I guarantee you will be much happier...

[P.S.: It's "culm", not "clum."]

Hello moriphen kudzu9,
Thank you for your response!!!
This seller is local to me so I just drove over to get it.
If what I bought dies then I will contact them and ask to dig my own.
I think they might be wanting not to disclose where this grove is located??
I'm not really on a budget, but I do not have unlimited dough either.
I'm just learning and hopefully I can get a bunch more species from
needmore bamboo...
I am still looking for some Spectabilis
I would love to get some of the more exotic species but I'm afraid they just won't survive zone 6
Thanks for the "Culm" correction I always get stuff sdrawkcab..
But see I learned something new here!!!! :albino:

There are enough of us who live in Zone 6 here that we have a pretty good idea of what will survive our climate. What exotic species were you interested in?

I'm pretty good at taking divisions, but once in a while I have a failure, and for that big a specimen you really need a large diameter root ball. It sounded from your description that the seller didn't really know what he was doing. My guess is that the culm will die, but the roots may make it if you keep them well-watered. Unfortunately, if you do get new growth, it will be pretty small, and it would be several years before you started to get any reasonable sized culms. If you do decide to dig your own, I can send you a set of instructions that may help you obtain a more survivable division...

I am about 12.66 miles from Needmore as the Pteradactyl flies.

so 12.66 miles as the Archeopteryx flies, but since gliders have to go back and forth, or in circles, its actually farther as the Pteradacyl flies!

or maybe Dan has been growing boo since birds had leather wings, and he just didnt want to admit it! :blackeye:

Gene-
This is getting very complex. I believe that we would have to know the takeoff and landing elevations, the Pterodactyl's glide factor, and the wind direction and speed before concluding that it wouldn't be a straight line flight...

dont tell anyone! as soon as it gets out, there will be another congressional comitee chartered to figure out if the acheopteryx or the pterodon would get to Brads place fastest, given both start and Dans....
