Hey everyone,
I recently started a Google Map name 'Bamboo Spotter'. The purpose of the map is to map spots in the world where bamboo plants or groves can be seen in public spaces or from public streets. I am looking for contributors that are willing to adhere to the posting standards and put placemarks on the maps of spots where bamboo can seen in public areas or from public streets. As a contributor, I ask that you do not post and advertising and if you have photos to post them with your placemark (but not required).
If you know how to navigate Google Maps, get started by going to this link - http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... fb67371166 .
If you get there and you can't find where to edit, just e-mail me at and I can manually add you as a collaborator. The map is set for public viewing and editing.
Please feel free to pass this message along as much as needed, the more collaborators the better the map. This would also be great if we can get fellow ABS members to post as well and also send this out to other members.
Many thanks,
Sean Bigley

I like this idea. I can't think of any at the moment, but I'll keep it in mind. Google Earth needs a bamboo search/fly-over feature.
To locals: If there is something in the Trade column of my plant list you want a start for, I root-prune every so often to control the bamboo in my limited space. You are welcome to any starts for free, no trading. Let me know and come get it if it's available. Pick up only.

There have been some postings of bamboo locations here in the past. One word of warning, sometimes people will find these bamboo locations on the web and raid them. I recall reading that at least one grove was wiped out this way.
Southern Indiana.

I can easily come up with about twenty locations locally, but all of it is Yellow Groove. If I expand the definition of local to cover about 60 miles and inside buildings, I can add a lot more species.

Franklin Woods Community Hospital in Johnson City TN used bamboo in landscaping. I didn't see how to post it on your map.

I added a few more to the map in Northern, VA.
I've noticed a lot of bamboo planted around the Capital Beltway I-495 mostly on the Maryland side. These seem to coincide with noise barriers but I'm sure that the use of bamboo for erosion control was a factor in placement as well. I applaud whoever in the Maryland State or Highway Department made that happen. On the times when I have to travel those roads my day is brightened by the site of these plantings.
I'd put place-markers for them as well but I do not know precisely where they are from memory.
