Re: Bambusa Verticillata or Gigantochloa Verticillata
I've had this one in huge pots now for years... and finally put it in the ground. I wanted to make sure I protected it. It is in a very protected area now. So, I don't know minimum temps. My guess based on what I have seen in pots would be around 27F.
We had a pretty severe freeze here in 2010. What I have seen is that just about everything... no matter how sensitive always comes back just fine if it gets through at least one year without a freeze. Sometimes, we can go 5 years without a freeze. Bottom line, I am confident I will have this one for years to come.
My Bambusa Nana is also in the ground in a very protected area. It is putting up lots of shoots. We have had a good amount of rain after almost no rain last year. I am really expecting the bamboo to do great this year.

I am hopefull this year too. The NWS climate prediction center is saying the drought should break in June with normal precepitation May and June. It should continue for at least a year.

I believe it has now been classified as Bambusa membranacea var. Striata

Re: Bambusa Verticillata or Gigantochloa Verticillata
I have seen this one "also classified" as many different bamboos. I am sticking with Bambusa Verticillata... primarily because of the person that gave it to me and where this plant originated from. In a pot, it only grew about 12 feet tall. It seems to be putting up taller culms in the ground... but nothing like membranacea. I also have B. Membranacea in the ground with several striped culms.
This one does not look like B. Membranacea. I have found over the years of chasing bamboo names that as long as there are new experts each year, there will always be guessing... based on individual experience. When we get to the point of science and DNA... I will follow that guide.
For now, as my good friend from Chino Hills California used to tell me, I will keep the name as given as long as it is from a reliable source with some background on the origin of the bamboo.
If you do a Google search for Bambusa Verticillata, you will find many different "also classified" names. I trust the person that I got it from.

This one is beautiful.
I want your growing climate/temps, but don't want to live down in the valley.
What can you do....
