B multiplex variegation

Post by veracruz »

I live in zone 8b/9a Texas. I have B multiplex hedges and they defoliated during our freeze (11 degrees F). There s new leafing out at the nodes but the new shoot leafs at the base are heavily variegated. Is this due to somatic mutation due to the cold and will the variegation hold? Other multiplex plants in thr area are showing the same characteristics.

Most likely, the embryos of the leaves suffered a little from the frost, and when they grow fully, the variegation will pass. However, it may be that the leaves of this year will be variegated, and the leaves of the next year will not

Are you certain of what type you have? How long have the hedges been planted?

I know B. Multiplex Silverstripe has a lot of variation, so perhaps this is what you have and it's just reached the point it decided to show it's true colors?
Someday maybe I'll find a bamboo my wife likes...in the meantime I'll keep planting more!
