Blue Culms
The light was just right this afternoon to really highlight the blue in Yushania Boliana and Fargesia Scabrida.

Re: Blue Culms
JWH - Nice culms there. Is your Scabrida shooting yet?
It is here, it should wait a month.

Re: Blue Culms
Mid February, that's crazy even for the West. I wonder if you have ever seen damage on Scabrida and what low temps has it seen?
Just see a few signs of shoots on apicirubens this afternoon.

Re: Blue Culms
I've only had the scabrida for a little over a year. This winter was unusually mild, no arctic blasts. Our lowest temp was around 25f/-4c. A normal winter here usually has 1-2 weeks of highs near freezing with night time lows in the teens F.
I have a 4 year old fargesia rufa that shoots at the same time as scabrida, it's been through brief cold snaps as low as 5f/-15c and never had any cold damage. A late season snow did snap a couple of developing shoots a few years back.

Bright sunlight is turning my chimonobambusa szechuanensis shoots purple, they'll turn almost black for a few months before fading back to green.

Re: Blue Culms
I had one of these in a pot before I upsized too soon and killed it but I had decided that it was the most beautiful bamboo I had seen - loved the overall form.JWH wrote:Bright sunlight is turning my chimonobambusa szechuanensis shoots purple, they'll turn almost black for a few months before fading back to green.

Re: Blue Culms
Hey brad,
I still have mine sizing up. Went from a 1 to a 3 now a 7-gallon pot, It needs planted this year.
Its hard for me to pick just one bamboo as my favorite, but the chimonobambusas are up towards the top of the list. I wasn't sure they would thrive in my zone, but so far so good. I have a Tumidissinoda & Quadrangularis 'Suow' planted at the edge of the forest, that seems to shelter them from the worst of winter. 3 winters back the Suow had it's tips burned after several nights as low as 5f. I expected total above ground death at least, but it bounced back nicely.
Tumidissinoda absolutely glows when the sun hits it.
