Anybody have any idea about what to do with this one. It is being sold in the USA. I talked with Kim Higbie and she and a good number of other people believe this is a "Dendrocalamus". It is not listed in the 2007 ABS Source List. We do have 16 pictures of it in the gallery.

It shoots late like the other Dendrocalamus at Mercer, well behind all the Bambusa.

Looks as though it belongs in Dendrocalamus subgen. Sinocalamus. Could it be a cultivar of Dendrocalamus latiflorus?

I have both Latiflorus and Parker... they don't look anything alike. I have two Parkers. One from Hawaii and one from Chuck in Florida. Both the Latiflorus came from Hawaii.

It is proveing to be rather cold hardy. 7 hours at 27 was the lowest I have recorded without any damage so far. I added a very small division at the farm this last winter and it saw multible freezes. The high winds whipped it up rather bad though.

Both of mine did well through hurricane Dolly. I was surprised. Not much damage at all.

I went back and looked at Chuck's reports for Parker Giant. He says it got down to 27 the first night, 24 and hard freeze the second night and 29 third night last month. He later reported some yellowing of the leaves... or slow showing of tenderness. Evidently, the Parker showed some stress on 10% of the leaves within a few days of the freezes.
This is very good news. Now if the hurricanes will stay away, the one at Mercer should be a very tall specimen in the coming years.

Linda took pics at the last meeting. I will get a copy when things slow down after March Mart and will get you a copy so we can post.

Yes, I saw the crooked one Mantis. It is going to be just fine. Parker is one tough bamboo.
