Different culm colors during the shooting

Post by Tarzanus »

I've seen strange shoots appearing on my potted Phyllostachys aureosulcata Spectabilis (Lamatempel). It's a small division of the same plant that I have outside in the ground, and it started shooting like a month earlier than the potted one. The in ground bamboo had pale yellow culms that failed to get any red tan (last year, I think they were darker yellow and turned red).

Well, now that I've seen the potted shoots, I'm even more puzzled about what causes the difference in shoot color - these shoots appeared olive green with normal dark green sulcus. All of them.
I expect them to turn yellow with time, but not necessarily. I'll take a photo or two.

Did any of you, more experienced growers, also noticed drastic difference in shoot culm color? I'd guess it's weather related, anyone heard about what could cause it?

The olive green plant was shocked extremely during the winter. It was frozen solid for long periods of time, followed by warm temperatures and full sun exposure, ... that same pattern lasted during whole winter. Lowest temperatures were around -19C, highest summer temperatures around 40C. Perhaps it might even start flowering.

Just so you can picture how it looks like. The yellow culms in the background are from last year. They appeared green (can't decide if it's more lime or olive green :P) and received red tan in bright light. Did any of you see something like that before?

Regarding culm colors, that aureosulcata is a wild bamboo. :D

Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Lama Temple' has been growing here since 2009 and I've noticed interesting culm colors over time, especially after colder weather.

For example, here's a culm that turned black after winter a couple years ago. For reference, the bottom center of this photo shows a branch segment that retained the usual bright yellow color:

Typically yellow culms appear, sometimes with magenta or red blushing in the sun. This year after a spring with warm temperatures followed by a freeze, multiple new culms are dominated by a burgundy color. In addition, a yellow culm has a green stripe that appears outside the sulcus.

I haven't yet seen an entire culm of this plant revert to olive green though.

Here this year winter low temperatures were at or near -25°C in January and February. The highest temperature before the last freeze in March was 25°C (77°F).

I've seen a lot of that this year. And there's practically no red coloring (except on these green culms) despite a lot of sun this spring/early summer.

Most of the shoots already behind thick layer of leaves and branches so I couldn't find the most evident non-sulcus green stripes, but I did search for a couple.. This is one of them.

I noticed that green stripes are generally thicker than last year - there's more green. There was also more zig-zagging than last spring.

Yes, this looks familiar and mine did turn yellow. This year had the most rose blush I've ever seen.
