Companion plant inside bamboo planter

Post by Diane »

I’m new here and everyone’s been so helpful.
My new question: can I put a trailing/weeping plant inside my planter like a Dichondra silver falls on the side corner (inside) the planter to drape down the sides?
Will it disturb the root system?
Thanks

It should not disturb bamboo in short run. That said, it is going to get over crowded and root bound with bamboo alone in that container pretty quickly if it is the "red margin" bamboo you referred to in other post.

Most running bamboos don't do that well in container over time, unless transplanted to a bigger one every could of years, in my experience.

Great, thanks for your reply.
Yes of course I will divide up as soon as it fills in. I have time until then, so far I only have about 7 culms in there. I’m not going to just let it explode! I put in a bamboo barrier inside the container so the roots don’t push their way into the wood and make it difficult for me to remove.

Did you put barrier on the bottom of the container? Barrier on the sides will force it down and it will go into the surrounding soil which is not a big deal but be aware.

I didn’t, on purpose, I left it open with wire for drainage. But I’ll be watching it closely. It’s raised off the ground, so I can peek underneath with a flashlight to watch.
How long would you think it would take for it to push itself underneath?
As I mentioned before I only have about 7-9 culms and my box is 2x6’

In general you can expect a rhizome to grow in length equal to the culm height, and to do so in a couple of weeks during peak growth season (now).
