red margin bamboo
Hi bought some red margin rhizomes and am wondering they will grow well in water/wetland areas around a pond? Would love to get some growing in a new fish pond on my land. Thanks!

Re: red margin bamboo
Are you referring to Phyllostachys Rubro...?
I don't think P Rubromarginata is particularly suited for wet feet, but I have found it to be a hardy grower and good looking bamboo. It also has the distinction of being one of the last Pyllostachys to send up shoots in season, making it good for areas with late season frost.
If I remember correctly, one of the only ones that do OK with "wet feet" is P atrovina(sp?).

But none of them can be planted in wet soils, they can be planted near wet soils and they might spread into them, but directly plant rhizomes in wet soils and I would expect them all to flunk...

Is that a pond with a liner? I'd be concerned about rhizomes poking holes.
Also remember that bamboo drops leaves and sheaths most of the year (it seems).

Bamboo rhizomes will indeed pierce a pond liner if given the chance to do so.

I was assuming it was Rubro but I will check to see what kind it is specifically. No pond liner, a pig pond a dug with an excavator, it can pierce everything it desires to pierce.

I confirmed, it is Rubromarginata that I have. Good to know it should do ok in 6A. For fun I will plant it near water to see how much it heads for the wet soil or not over time
