Bamboo Outlaw,

Welcome aboard. I've checked out your website and noticed that you have Bambusa ventricosa 'Buddha's Belly'. What I'm needing is some closeup details of identifying characteristics of the 'da belly' bamboo. The reason is that there is some confusion pertaining to the ID-ing of B. tuldoides and B. t. ventricosa. Chris Stapleton, species list editor for the ABS Source List, has asked that I try to get images of these bamboos and upload them at Bambooweb.info. Here is an example of what I'm looking for:

Mike,

You are abolutely correct. I think I've seen that hand several times digging on my Bambusa sp. 'Clone X'.

Hello all,

The forum has really taken off, great deal. Bill and all, fantastic job :D

Roy, I have a Sony 7.2 mp camera now and can get some pics for the site. I am so glad the Bv vers Bt debate is still being considered. Along this same line, have you noticed that B Kimmei has a regular and dwarf or bellying form?

Bamboo is really taking off here in Tx. Not too many years back, we couldn't find much of anything here in Texas. Early folks like Darwin Nelson were really pioneers in bringing bamboo into our area. Roy, you most certainly helped with all your generosity in having us Texas boys digging in your back yard! I have had 3 runs to Florida myself in gathering plant material. Our monthly bamboo meetings at Mercer have started up for 2006. We meet the fourth Sat of each month from 9 to 12 starting at the visitor center. The director, Linda Gay is acquiring a wonderful bamboo collection that is the most impressive in our area. My how things have grown.

Just wanted to say Hi to all. I will be lurking around from here on out and contribute when I can. thanks...

Bamboo Outlaw,

Good to have you onboard.

That Sony 7.2 should take some impressive photos. I just wonder if your daughter has shown you how to really use that camera to get the same type of images she takes? My Sony 5.0 is still working and taking decent pictures and it's over 3 years old. Once you go digital, you'll never go back to film.

I've got the B. tuldoides and Bambusa sp. 'Clone X' fairly well documented with images show detailed identifying characteristics. Just need to get the B. t. v. 'Buddha's Belly' documented with images. Even though B. Kimmei has never been thrown in the debate, and I don't understand why, that would also be another one to get some closeups on.

Chris Stapleton, and of course many of us, are eagerly awaiting the publication of a new bamboo book by several of the tropical bamboo experts. The book may answer our questions about the B. tuldiodes and B. ventricosa debate. If not, then Chris says that we can start our own work of trying to resolve this debatable issue.

Roy, the daughter is still working photography in school. College this fall... I got the girls a Sony DSC-V3, same as I use at work. I was impressed enough with these I got about 6 of them.

I will work with you on getting what all we need, but am quite sure there will never be a camera made where I can get as good of shots as what you have pulled off. You are great :o

Hi Roy and all...

Is the culm sheath at the top of this forum a B. Tuldoides? I haven't read all the scoop about B. tuldoides vs. B. ventricosa vs. B. clone X. I have all three. This is what I think...

B. ventricosa has white stripes on the culm sheaths on both sides... auricles are same size.

B. tuldoides has one large and one small auricle... no stripes on culm sheath.

B. clone x.... haven't had it long enough to see see new culm sheaths in detail or take pics.

My guess is that these are three different types. Just a thought.
