Re: Phyllostachys what?
The leaves are too large on that boo to be nuda. Nuda has the smallest leaf of all the Phyllostachys.
Other than that, all I can say is that its another unknown green phyllostachys (UGP). I have several myself, and just about every nursery I have visited in the past 5 years has several UGPs that they cannot ID. Until they size up, many are very hard to ID. Even then, they may still be hard to ID.

Re: Phyllostachys what?
Ah... then it is highly likely that it is one of the Phy. aureosulcatas. While there are other rough culm types of Phyllostyachys, the aureosulcatas are the most common, especially when rubbing upward. If it is all green, it would likely be Phy. aureosulcata Alata. If there is a faint yellow sulcus (not always present or obvious), then it is Yellow Groove. If the culms have stripes or turn color, most typically yellow, it would be one of the other aureosulcatas. Those types tend to have random white-striped leaves though. All of the aureosulcatas tend to have random zig zag culms as well, sometimes being quite bizarre.zxylene wrote:On the culm up rub it does have fuzz or roughness.

P. nuda could get that big there--we saw a huge grove near Philadelphia at the ABS meeting a couple of years ago.

The diameter you listed is larger than what I would have expected but it looks somewhat like Ph. m. 'Decora'.

That looks a lot like an aureosulcata shoot to me, but I've only been looking at them for three years now.

Looks like one of the Phy aureosulcata clan to me as well.

Re: Phyllostachys what?
A post on my flickr post says that it is Aureosulcata Alata. And after reading about it that seems like it could be correct. I need to get back to the mother grove with some calipers and photo the true diamater and size of that grove. It is a hike back into the woods though. hopefully I will make the trek soon as it would be neat to see that monster grove shooting.

When you go back, check out the darkest culms, they will be the youngest, and look for a yellow sulcus. Yellow Groove is much more common than Alata and it sometimes reverts to producing green culms with no stripes particularly in very old groves. But it may be Alata as you suspect.

Re: Phyllostachys what?
I know for sure there was no yellow any where on the mother grove. I see lots of yellow groove around and this had no yellow. I really need to get back there.

Re: Phyllostachys what?
I went out today to see how the shoots were doing and I counted 17 shoots. Holy crap and they all look as big as the original two culms. I was not expecting that much growth in under a year.

Re: Phyllostachys what?
I just went back to the grove where I got my bissetii, took some pictures and it doesn't really look like the bissetii I see in most pictures. It grows in an upright form, smooth culms, older culms turn yellowish, shoots grow 25ft away from the closest culm, and it looks pretty much maxed out at 10ft tall, very short for a phyllostachys. Culms don't even grow that close together either. The shoots start out green and usually turn white and striped so I'm currently not sure what it is. This is a really small bamboo, but I'm not sure if it's stunted because of its location or lack of care.
I just know this is a really invasive species with really loooooong thin rhizomes. Many phyllostachys hardly run around here, but this one can take over a yard, maybe the neighbor's yard too in a couple years.
Here's the grove.

Steve -- why didn't you start a new topic for this post? It's going to get lost down here. =)

Re: Phyllostachys what?
I now have 38 shoots on this plant it is crazy will all these shoots be a problem? I planted this not even a year ago with two culms 7 and 10 feet tall and now it has 38 shoots. Is this normal?

Re: Phyllostachys what?
I figured I should post some pics of these shoots here is a close up this may help give a positive ID

and here is a pic of some of the shoots.

It seems like every few days it adds more shoots. When I first planted it and read about bamboo I was not worried about it taking over my forest but with this kind of growth off of two culms in half shade I am getting a little concerned.
