A handsome bamboo hedge in a Japanese temple ground

Post by Cactus Joe »

But what is it? I am thinking Semiarundinaria fastuosa[/url] from it's culms - straight, long and even internodes. But the yellow colour of the mature culms throws me off a bit. Regardless, this hedge was beautifully kept.

Like Kyuzo (pictured above) in "The Seven Samurai," I've "...Killed (more than) two..." bamboos.

It sure acts like S. fastuosa, but it looks like a pleached Bambusa. "Poodle" shrubs are popular in the U.S. but they are usually junipers, boxwoods or other woody shrub or tree. Bamboo "poodles" are another thing completely. :) Cool pic.

cant say its Fastuosa. I dont like that colour on the culm if thats the case. Any bamboo will produce more "long" branches if its topped. However that mass looks tropical. I dont know tropical bamboos enough but bambusa seems likely. Where was the photo taken? -Eastlandia
