Does anyone know what this bamboo is and if it is edible?

Greetings, select one of the darker/fresher green canes, take your hand and gently rub 'up cane' - if it feels sandpapery it is a form of Phyllostachys aureosulcata, most likely that 'type' form. If so, you'll also find alternating yellow vertical bands - alternating from side to side from one branch to the next. This is one of the most common bamboo in the east/NE US. If rough but no yellow on any canes then probably the 'Alata' form of Phy aureosulcata.

If it is smooth then it is unlikely to be able to ID it until there are new shoots popping up.
