Happy Volcano Day

Post by bambooweb »

Does anyone else have stories of 29 years ago when the sky went black?

I visiting my parents and about noon the strangest cloud that I ever saw came over and completely blocked out the sun followed by the starting to fall and the power going out so it became completely black. The following morning everything outside was covered with almost 3 inches of light color ash with an eighth of an inch of dark ash on top so when you walked in it the light ash puffed out and made an interesting "Moon scape".

It also destroyed 100s of engines in the following week as the ash was small enough to go through normal paper air filters. Two stage air filters and oil air filters quickly sold out so people made a number of different snorkels to get clean air from above the vehicle and funnel it to the air cleaner.

It was good for the plants that year as it added sulfur to the soil and sealed the top of the ground so moisture stayed close to the surface.
