WANTED: Arundo donax (variegated)

I want some variegated Arundo donax for two 10 gallon pots by my pool. I LOVE how this plant looks, but don't have the 'full sun' space to stick some in the ground.

Unless anyone has any negative experience growing this stuff in containers, I'd love to have it. Anyone have some for sale?

We had some non variegated Arundo donax planted in the ground surrounded by a concrete ring. It eventually filled the circle and broke the concrete. I dug it all out and it would occasionally come back out of the ground. It will grow from the smallest piece of rhizome.

wannabRN, that's the stuff alright. I don't have bamboo for trade yet.

If it's very easy to grow from rhizome, I may snatch a piece from a grove i drive by daily. I tried to grow some from seed a few summers ago, but nothing ever sprouted.

Hello Jeremy,

These stuff grow like bamboos and you can start them with a rhizome, my bamboos are growing into the Arundo Donax area now I don't want to go dig into there yet until the bamboos finish shooting... I will be gladly dig up a piece for you...

This plant has a nice looking tassel at the top of it and look really cool, but here in windy AR all of them got blown off but one remain, they got thick fast! wish my bamboos can grow big that fast!

I still remember 3 summers ago when I first got bit by the bamboo bug. I went and dug up this beautiful plant I think was bamboo in a 100+ degree summer day, and took it home and plant it between my Castillion and Inversa... and I email Kudzu and asked him if he knows what kind of bamboo they were :))) only to found out from him and the first time I know the name of this :P

I will let you know when I able to dig some up in a few weeks free of charge :)

Have a good Memorial day holiday!

Rog

I've had 3 plants in part-shade for several years. They come up and grow tall every year, but never spread at all! They're in an area that gets lots of water from a storm drain and creek flooding, but also can dry out. Don't know if it's the sun, water or anything else that keeps them from spreading.

Have yall seen this??....a Papermill in Alabama switching from PINES to Arundo donax????.....its a news story from 2005 and I'm not sure the status....It probably fell through but I still find this very interesting.

See Link:

Also, I am having a discussion about this with fellow foresters in the State of Alabama here:

Yall may not agree with everything I am saying but I find it an interesting discussion..... :)

Wow, there are some over-the-top reactions to Arundo donax. You/they might want to do some research on it, but one source I read a while ago said that farmers in the Western US have been using it since the 1850s or something like that for erosion control. While it spreads, comparing it to kudzu seems somewhat sensationalistic. Someone should point out to them that it is significantly different from bamboo.

I've been wanting a piece of this for a spell and found nice large pots of it the other day in the aquatic plants section at the nursery so perhaps you could check out those sections in your area nurseries. Strangely though, I didn't buy one? Hmmm....

Jeremy,

I just dug some yesterday. I was in NC digging bamboo, and the owner had several plots of it. You are welcome to a piece of it if you like. You'll have to tell me how I should get it ready to ship. Do you wash the dirt off the rhizome? Are the small tubers with small plants viable? Just let me know.
