Wanted - Pleioblastus viridistriatus

Post by Eric Layton »

I saw a beautiful planting of this, a patch of golden yellow that brightened up the whole garden around it. If anyone out there has some, I can trade for other groundcover bamboos. I have Pleioblastus shibuyanus Tsuboi or Sasaella masamuneana albostriata for trade. Eric

I have some labeled as var. chrysophyllus but so far it isn't very yellow. I'd trade some with you but maybe it's mislabeled.[/i]

Thuja,
Where do you have it planted? In the shade it will not get very yellow. The trade-off is that in the sun the yellow leaves will burn in the summer heat.

Pl viridistriatus

Post by Eric Layton »

Gene, I sent you an email. Lets trade!

Mike, I wouldn't mind trying some of the var. chrysophyllus. If I recall correctly, that does not have any stripes like the regular viridistriatus. Which one of the two mentioned would you like?

I'd go for the S. m. albostriata but I still need to convince myself I have chrysophyllus. I don't want to send you the wrong thing.

Chrysophyllus

Post by Thuja »

Well, I went out today to the same nursery where I got the supposed 'Chrysophyllus' this spring. They had a bunch of plants labeled as such but only one was yellow. Also it seemed as tho the yellow one was the only one with furry leaf undersides. Low & behold, viridistriatus is supposed to have soft-textured leaves, so maybe I have a genuine one now. Trouble is it's very small... it might be like splitting the atom.

Mike,
Save the atom, we wouldn't want any unexpected fission destroying the whole garden.
In the spring, before I cut back my ground cover bamboo, I will cut out a small division of the S.m.a. for you anyway. It is getting about as big as the space allows and I will have to start rhizome prunning from now on.
