I've decided to get rid of some of my marginally-hardy bamboos in the spring, so if you're in z7 or up and are looking for some free plants, start thinking about a road trip to St. Louis next year. I'm probably getting rid of:
- Ph. nuda 'Localis'
- Ph. viridiglaucescens
- Ph. lithophila
- Ph. arcana
Maybe a few others.
I say spring but if you're warm enough these could go now -- overwintering will be tricky for me.
Think about it.

Drats! Why can't St. Louis be in North Carolina, Georgia, or Tennessee
Seriously, I'm surprised that nuda 'Localis' isn't good for you there, but I have heard that nuda's hardiness is greatly overstated, especially if there is much wind involved. I am wondering: have you tried other nuda forms and are they any better?

The nuda is probably fine here, but I just don't have space for it.

If you don't have any other nuda you might want to hang on to it. Very S L O W to size and show hardiness but it is a unique green form Phy and looks best planted by itself as an accent - nice form. New spring canes are dusky with a white ring and are an eye catcher.
Here the arcana generally winters over with leaf burn and is also slow to size up but the culms live long enough that they start turning black for the initial 3 feet or so I find it of some interest. Probably not enough if space is a concern.

Thanks Brad. Is nuda 'Localis' slower than heteroclada to size up, or comparable? Space definitely is becoming a concern, although... I do have neighbors with a huge yard that have offered to let me plant some bamboo there. Hmmm.

Not as slow as heteroclada, twice as tall in a little less time.

Hi Alan,
I am also in St. Louis and have come across your blog many times since becoming a bamboo lover! I was wondering if you still had any you were looking to get rid of? I am also curious if you know of local nurseries that sell larger plants. I searched last summer and couldn't seem to find any local sources. Thanks in advance!

Anne -- definitely! Email me (from the "about me" page on my blog), PM me through this forum, or email me through this forum. Things are just starting to shoot, so this is a good time.
Alan.
