Our first bamboo to shoot in the ground (undisturbed) is Ph. praecox prevernalis

Others are not far behind.

Nice shoot Mike! Is it as big as I think it is? I just got praecox last fall. How does prevernalis differ from the type?

David,
I don't grow the regular Ph. praecox so I can't make a direct comparison. The ABS source list states that prevernalis has internodes that are smaller in the middle than at the ends. If they are it is not very noticable. I got this plant from Richard Waldron and the origin is somewhat hazy. It is a nice plant and I think that shoot is in the 1 1/2-2" range. It is listed at 2" dia. in the source list but our plant is 4 or 5 yrs old and I would guess may get larger. The shoot is somewhat similar to Ph. elegans and shoots at about the same time.

Pseudosasa japonica has taken off. I went out this morning and had several shoots a foot and a half out of the ground. They were not there a couple days ago when I checked.

I had to transplant a B. doli. 'Green stripe' last weekend, and unbeknownst (is that a word?) to me it had a baby shoot coming up. I killed it (the shoot, not the whole plant) when I was removing the mulch that I had piled around it this winter. :(

Found the first Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' shoot of the season.

The Sasa veitchii hasn't put up any shoots yet, but it has lots of swollen leaf buds and should put up shoots any day.
