Bamboo Dig in Centralia, WA

Post by bambooweb »

Does anyone want to dig bamboo this coming weekend?

I have been talking to a woman in Centralia, WA and she says that they have six species of bamboo including vivax, timber, golden, yellow groove, black and a low growing variegated. They want to sell the property and would like to find people to take the bamboo before they sell. Her husband will be getting back from Kosovo on Friday for a three week vacation so the timing would be right.

She says that most of the plantings are about 6 feet across but some have escaped into the neighbors yard so we would also have to work with the neighbor to remove them.

I will be going to a PNWC board meeting in Tacoma on Saturday and I might stay till Sunday to dig bamboo. :)

I will get back with more information as soon as I hear back from her husband.

I have received a reply from the owner about the bamboo.
About 6 of the stands do cover about 6 feet - these stands are Vivax, golden groove, a variety of Japanese timber bamboo, 2 stands of golden, and a stand of black. Some may be slightly smaller than 6 feet, but certainly close.

One other stand is about 12 feet long and is a mix of about a 5 to 6 foot high variegated and some miniature nonvariegated.

The final stand is about 8 feet, in a fairly confined area, and is also a variegated variety, that tops out at about 4 to 5 feet.
I have also arranged a place for me to stay on the night of the 24th so I can be there on Sunday.

We are set for Sunday and I plan on being there from 9:00 to 5:00.

The bamboo is at 116 Jalyn Street, Centralia, WA. (Close to I-5)

The owner does not think he has bamboo mites but has not been home in months so I am bringing some spray and soil drench to spray mine and I might have some extra.

I can be reached by cell phone on Saturday and Sunday.

Bill,

Thanks for organizing this. It was good to meet people and dig some gorgeous bamboo, although I am sore today.

Mike
Thanks for coming. I have some photos of Kelly's and My pickups filled with bamboo that I will post later.
You missed the loading of the Vivax. I measured mine this morning and it stretches over 16 feet past my tailgate so the total height above the rootball is almost 23 feet.

For everyone else there is bamboo left there that they would like removed. There is a lot of Aurea, a good size area of Nigra, a small (3' dia) clump of Japanese timber plus some stray culms and rhizomes and a large section of S. m. 'Albostriata' and an unknown green groundcover bamboo. If someone would like to contact the owners, they can at norwaylil@gmail.com

I just received a request from the City of Issaquah to help remove some bamboo on land that they just purchased and want to convert into a native plant site. When I get more information I will post it here.

Bill, way to kick off the growing season wih a dig.....sounds like there was some nice divisions. 23 ft...almost tops my nuda last year. I measured mine and it was 26 ft. ....an FYI to people carying long lengths. My neighbor the state trooper says as long as it is contained(wrapped) and properly flagged (18 inch square red flag), you can have it stick out directly behind you with no worries of a ticket. This of course pertains to jersey but jersey is known for ticketing for everything.

Bill,

From your pictures, it looks as though neither truck wrapped their bamboo. I have a large roll of Saran Wrap type material that I just roll around the bamboo and the wrap seals itself because of its adhesive qualities. I had a doctor who bought a truck load of tall bamboo from me and he used the wrap on his load of bamboo. He worked like a pro wrapping the bamboo. He was a gynecologist, so I guess he has to be good with his hands.

I use the shrink wrap method as well. no leaf burn when traveling.

That is four divisions wrapped. I drove over an hour on major interstate highways. no problems

That's a good job of wrapping. It's ready to go into Mother Earth's oven to produce to new delicious shoots. :D

I normally remove a number of leaves and branches to match the decrease in root mass so I was not worried about the outer leaves. I will post a photo of how they looked after over 300 miles at freeway speeds. There was very little damage passed the leaves on the branches that were not wrapped tight.
